The Yankees won against the Baltimore Orioles 11-3 on the second-ever CUNY Day.
The game started with a home run from Ben Rice, giving the Yankees the lead for the first three innings until Blaze Alexander singled letting Weston Wilson score. At the bottom of the third, Aaron Judge hit a home run and Rice scored, extending the Yankees’ lead to 3-1.
At the top of the fourth inning, Leody Taveras recorded a run batted in as Pete Alonso scored, and then Jeremiah Jackson grounded out in a double play that allowed Tyler O’Neil to score, tying the game 3-3.
Jeremiah Jackson grounded out in a double play next, that allowed Tyler O’Neill to score, tying the game 3-3. Ryan McMahon singled, letting Jasson Domínguez score in the
sixth inning and bringing the Yankees back in the lead, 4-3. In the eighth inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Austin Wells, McMahon, Jose Caballero, Paul Goldschmidt and Judge all scored as the Yankees pulled off an 11-3 win. The first game in the series was Alonso’s first time playing in New York since signing to the Orioles. During this game, Alonso was met with a chorus of boos from the crowd as he stepped up to bat. Students were able to purchase tickets to the game through a special FEVO link, like last year.
With a ticket, CUNY community members received a New York Yankees CUNY-branded jersey with CUNY on the back and a patch on the left sleeve. When asked about how she found out about the game, Jeimy Santos, a Queens College student, told The Ticker, “I’m a part of this
club, the president of the club, Josiah, told me about it, and he said that he was gonna come down with some friends, so then, kind of left me with a thought, lingering in my head.”
Other students said they found out about the game by email, either because they had gone to CUNY Day last season or because their college’s office of student life sent out information about the event.
CUNY students enjoyed the game for several reasons, but Yun Yan said, “My favorite part so far is definitely being able to see, like, a bunch of CUNY alumni and current CUNY students come together. Super cool to learn and get to know more about people who come from different schools.”
