The New York Yankees dominated their longtime rivals, the Boston Red Sox, in a three-game series at Fenway Park.
New York opened the series with a commanding 4-0 victory, leaving Boston searching for an answer.
Giancarlo Stanton led the offense, launching a solo home run in the second inning. Later in the sixth inning, Stanton delivered a two-run double, bringing home Aaron Judge and Amed Rosario, after leading off the inning with back-to-back walks, making the score 3-0.
In the eighth, Stanton was robbed of a hit when Boston’s Ceddanne Rafaela made a leaping catch at the wall. Nevertheless, Randal Grichuk doubled to bring home Cody Bellinger, extending New York’s lead to 4-0.
However, Ben Rice, who had homered in four straight games, went 0-4 at the plate, striking out in all his at-bats.
Despite Rice’s struggles, the pitchers held off the Red Sox. Luis Gil got his first win of the season, containing Boston to just two hits over his six innings. Gil finished with two strikeouts and three walks, preventing Boston from building momentum during the game.
The Yankees continued their dominance in Game 2, setting the tone immediately.
Right off the bat, Rosario hit a three-run homer in the first inning, bringing home Judge and Stanton. The early explosion gave New York control before Boston even settled in.
In the third inning, Rosario hit a sacrifice flyout to allow Judge to score, extending the Yankees’ 4-0 lead.
The Red Sox found a breakthrough late in the game, as Jarren Duran hit a single to bring home Trevor Story, but it was too late, and the Yankees held on for a 4-1 win.
On the mound, Max Fried kept Boston quiet for the most part, allowing only three hits over eight scoreless innings. He struck out nine batters and only walked two, preventing Boston from making any moves.
By Game 3, the Yankees were in full control of the series, but the final game was set to be the most competitive of them all.
Boston struck first in the second inning when Marcelo Mayer doubled, allowing Story to score, giving the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.
New York responded in the fifth inning when Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered and tied the game 1-1. Boston’s Carlos Narváez answered right back, hitting a home run and bringing the lead back to the Red Sox.
The turning point came in the seventh inning when Bellinger hit a single, allowing Jose Caballero to move to second and Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham to score, giving the Yankees their first lead of the game at 3-2.
Moments later, Judge singled and Boston’s Wilyer Abreu committed a fielding error, allowing Caballero to score and pushing the Yankees’ lead to 4-2.
New York rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler, who grew up a Red Sox fan as a Massachusetts native, delivered an amazing performance, holding Boston to- just four hits.
The Yankees and Red Sox are set to meet again on June 5. After a dominating sweep in Boston, New York will hope to carry that momentum back home, while the Red Sox will aim to even out the series.
