Julian Alvarez made the decision to leave Atletico Madrid this summer, one of the most dramatic transfer stories.
Atletico Madrid, a consistent contender for La Liga against Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, are standing firm on their decision to keep Alvarez at all costs.
Alvarez’s decision to leave Atletico Madrid has invited significant interest in the Argentine striker from rival club FC Barcelona, adding more tension to the situation as two rival clubs fight to have him for the 2026-2027 season.
Alvarez reportedly left Manchester City for Atletico Madrid in hopes of creating his own story in a new team, where he was promised a starting role that he didn’t receive at his old club due to Erling Haaland’s stellar performances. Atletico Madrid capitalized and built a long-term project with Alvarez, but never expected that Alvarez would be seeking a transfer two years later.
In response to the rumors about Alvarez moving to Barcelona, Atletico Madrid tried to make it clear Alvarez was not leaving.
The rumors didn’t matter as no formal bids were heard, but once rumors spread that Alvarez wanted out of the club and Atletico Madrid was trapping him by refusing to sell, the media was quick to respond. Atletico Madrid faced massive backlash as a result.
Football journalist Fabrizio Romano posted trade rumors about Alvarez’s ongoing negotiations with Barcelona. In response, Atletico Madrid posted multiple fake bids on their official account on X to delegitimize Romano’s claims, including a fake bid for Barcelona star Lamine Yamal, offering “4 tickets to tomorrow’s Bad Bunny concert, a one-year subscription to ABC and a bag of sunflower seeds.”
The tweets went viral, and fans were quickly labeled Atletico Madrid as an unserious franchise, accusing the team of having a “small club mentality.” Alvarez, on the other hand, was labeled the victim according to multiple news outlets such as COPE and Yahoo Sports. At the time, Alvarez was missing from training due to being diagnosed with depression.
Some fans claimed that Atletico Madrid was far too harsh on the player and should grant Alvarez’s wishes of never wearing an Atletico Madrid jersey again.
On the other hand, many argued that Alvarez knew what he was signing up for when he joined the team in 2024. With a $540 million release clause and a six-year contract, it was clear that Alvarez was there to stay.
Some fans did not agree that Alvarez was a victim, instead they claimed his bad luck to be a direct consequence of his decisions, not Atletico Madrid. —
Atletico Madrid said in an official statement, “The player is being portrayed as the victim, but the only victims in the Julian case are us,” reflecting the sentiment of betrayal felt by Atletico Madrid’s fans.
As it stands, Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil said, “Julian will not be sold to Barcelona now and even in the future,” ending all possibilities of Alvarez playing for Barcelona any time soon.
