Phenix City’s Kinley Rasmus set the Little League World Series record for most hits by a girl during their game against Soundview Little League from Washington state. 

Rasmus has also recorded 14 total strikeouts throughout the tournament, matching the tournament record previously set by Mo’ne Davis, who was drafted 10th overall in the inaugural season of the WPBL. Rasmus also recorded eight strikeouts in her first game pitching in the tournament, matching the single-game record, according to USA Today.

Phenix City, the Southeast Region representative from Alabama, went 4-0 in its regional tournament to clinch a spot in the Little League World Series. During the regular season, the team went 3-2 before being eliminated by West Side Little League from Ohio, which was representing the Great Lakes region. West Side went on to finish fourth overall in the tournament, after losing to Joto Little League from Tokyo, which represented Japan. 

Phenix City began the tournament by losing 2-0 to Soundview, which was representing the Northwest Region. They bounced back in Game 16, defeating Sweetwater Valley Little League from California, representing the West Region 12-2. Games 24 and 26 were much closer, but Phenix City still secured the wins against East Side Little League from Pennsylvania and Soundview Little League representing the Mid-Atlantic Region 6-5 and 4-2 respectively. Phenix City’s record-setting run came to an end with an 11-2 loss to West Side.

Rasmus is not the only star athlete in her family. Her uncle, Colby Rasmus, was a center fielder in the MLB for nine years, playing for the Cardinals, Blue Jays, Astros, Rays and Orioles. Her father, Cory Rasmus, was a pitcher in the MLB for four years, playing for the Braves and the Angels. Jill Rasmus, her mother, also showed athletic prowess when she played softball at the University of Southern Mississippi. 

With the first season of the WPBL in progress, Rasmus’ record-setting run may serve as a look to the future of women’s professional baseball.
