Following several years of negotiations, the merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery officially closed on Oct. 6, bringing Hollywood’s biggest studios and streaming services together under a single company: Skydance Corporation.
Chairman and CEO David Ellison took over Paramount Global in 2025 in a major acquisition and has awaited the closing of the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger.
Ellison will lead the newly combined company along with the company’s new co-CEO, outgoing chief executive of Mattel, Ynon Kreiz.
“Today is a historic day, not just for Skydance but for our entire industry. From the start, our ambition was to bring these two storied studios together and create a stronger competitor, with the talent, resources, and reach to tell great stories in every genre, on every platform, for audiences everywhere. Now that ambition is a reality,” Ellison said in an official statement.
Skydance has over 200 million streaming global subscribers across its platforms and is one of the largest entertainment companies in the world.
The new corporation controls everything that Paramount and Warner Bros. previously owned, along with many cable channels and major brands such as “Harry Potter” and “Mission: Impossible.”
The merger process took nearly a year and raised many concerns about the impact it would have on competition in the entertainment industry.
A proposed settlement was ultimately reached with several states, including California, Arizona and New York, which argued that combining two major Hollywood companies could reduce competition.
As part of the large settlement, the company agreed to abide by several requirements to protect movie theaters and workers.
These requirements include the ensured release of at least 30 movies in theaters annually, with each film staying exclusively in theaters for at least 45 days and various protections for independent filmmakers.
The merger continues to raise questions about the future of streaming services such as Paramount+ and HBO Max.
Currently, the platforms are continuing to operate separately but are anticipated to eventually become one streaming service.
Because both platforms now occupy the same parent company, the two could have overlapping departments in the future, leading to a wave of potential layoffs; Hollywood’s entire workforce would be dramatically affected.
Ellison addressed the concern regarding the film industry’s workforce in a statement, “We must never lose sight of what matters most: our people. We will build a culture where people feel respected, empowered, supported and proud of the work they do.”
As Skydance begins its integration with the two large entertainment companies, many people remain unsure about the long-term impact the merger will have.
The merger marks a very significant shift in the film industry.
Viewers will have to wait and see how the creation of Skydance Corporation affects competition, employment, prodcution quality and viewership across the entertainment industry.
