The New York Sirens played their first Professional Women’s Hockey League game at Madison Square Garden on April 4, beating the Seattle Torrents.
This was the first time a PWHL game was played at the world’s most famous arena, as part of the “PWHL Takeover Tour,” marking the night. The game set the record for the most attended women’s hockey game in a U.S. arena with a sold-out 18,006 crowd.
The match also televised on ION, marking the first ever national broadcast of a PWHL game
As fans entered the arena they were given game-specific sirens towels to wave during the game.
The game started with an inaugural puck drop from tennis legend and PWHL advisory board member Billie Jean King. She was joined by her partner Ilana Kloss and WNBA player Flau’jae Johnson.
Both teams played strongly with Torrents’ Alex Carpenter scoring the first goal of the game during the second period. In the middle of an intense game, fans were treated to a karaoke of “All The Things She Said” by t.A.T.u. The song has recently become popular due to its usage in Netflix’s “Heated Rivalry” about rival hockey players turned lovers.
Sarah Fillier scored late in the last period to tie the game, putting the teams into a five-minute, three-on-three overtime.
After a tense five minutes, the teams entered a five-round shootout. Kayla Osbourne gave an impressive performance by stopping four out of five shootouts. Defender Maja Persson scored the final game-winning goal for the Sirens. The Sirens are currently tied with the Torrents at fifth place in the PWHL standings. The Sirens have four games left to play and need to win all three in order to qualify for playoffs.
