Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, known professionally as rapper and musician “Bad Bunny,” has once again created a remarkable album that has attracted the attention of listeners across the globe.
It was clear his goal was to display his love for his home country, Puerto Rico. “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS” was released on Jan. 5 and consists of 17 tracks, all with different styles, beats, themes, and lyrics. As the next few songs play from the album, fans begin to understand his message.
Bad Bunny is known for creating albums that bring people together through song, dance, and emotion. His 2022 album, “Un Verano Sin Ti,” was a huge hit along with others, but this one especially stood out due to the emotional power and sentiment displayed through his songs’ themes and lyrics. “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS” has made its mark and may be Bad Bunny’s most diverse and complex album yet.
Each song is inspired by different music genres originating from Puerto Rico, such as salsa, bomba, plena, and reggaeton. He also sampled lyrics and beats from other various Puerto Rican artists. Bad Bunny displayed pride for his country and as a form of cultural reclamation.
Toward the end of the album, there was a specific song that hit most fans hard. Titled the same as the album, “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS” translates to “I should’ve taken more photos.” The song became a huge trend on TikTok as fans began to post photos of their family, their countries, and even pets to show how this song resonated with them. The album evokes so much emotion, connecting fans across cultures through universal themes of nostalgia and grief.
Bad Bunny was also recently featured on NBC’s “Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” where he performed a few select songs from his album at the 42nd St. Subway Station on Jan. 13. His final song, “LA MunDANZA,” ended with his pride in representing the people of Puerto Rico with multiple political references. He describes himself to be ‘unapologetically Boricua.’
“They killed people here for waving the flag, that’s why I bring it anywhere I want now,” Bad Bunny told Teen Vogue.
This album displays how humans can go through different emotions so quickly, from happy and excited to sad and heartbroken, and in this case, even political.
