Welcome to In Tune with WBMB, a weekly column where a member of the station covers a new track from the underground. This week’s article is written by Victoria Zima.
Opened by the sounds of flying flutes, trumpets and electric guitar, Broken Social Scene’s single off their comeback project offers a comforting perspective on giving up and the outcome of acceptance.
Their album, “Remember The Humans,” released on May 8, is their first in nine years. Focusing on human connectivity, empathy and community, the album delivers a clear message for current times.
The album’s first track, “Not Around Anymore,” takes their audiences back to the band’s original sound from the early 2000s, but with a more aged outlook. Its repetitive but light chorus and lyrics such as, “I guess it’s colder times / call it the best of times,” give listeners an understanding of human acceptance and how indifferences can still be viewed in a hopeful light. The tempo and overall melody of the song are completely consistent throughout, creating a dependable atmosphere within the arrangement. The song involves synthesizers, horns and layered vocals; not one instrument stands out more than another.
The sound of the band is unifying, supportive and hopeful, giving listeners a chance to become part of the band’s mission while embarking on the inevitable journey of acceptance.
