The Giants lost to the Rams 28-6 on Monday night as they racked up injury after injury throughout the game.
In the first quarter, Matthew Stafford started the game with a pass to Davante Adams, who scored the first touchdown of the game. Harrison Mevis then kicked the extra point to give the Rams a 7-0 lead.
Kyren Williams later scored a touchdown on a pass from Stafford, with Mevis kicking another extra point. Later in the second quarter, Dominic Zvada scored a 24-yard field goal, giving the Giants three points.
The third quarter was similar to the last, with Adams scoring a touchdown on a pass from Stafford. Mevis kicked the extra point, bringing the Rams’ lead to 21-3. Zavada kicked a 52-yard field goal for the Giants, bringing the game to 21-6 at the end of the third quarter.
The Rams’ Terrance Ferguson scored a touchdown on a pass from Stafford, and Mevis once again kicked for the extra point, bringing the final score of the game to 28-6.
When asked about the Giants’ mentality after this hard loss, coach John Harbaugh said, “We’ve got a game to play. We’ve got a really good football team. We’ve got a football team that’s going to be way better than it is right now. And that’s what we’re going to be attacking.”
Along with the loss, the Giants also suffered a few injuries during the game. Quarterback Jaxson Dart, edge rusher Brian Burns, wide receiver Malik Nabers and left tackle Andrew Thomas were all injured during the game.
Dart sustained a sprained medial collateral ligament during the first quarter.
He spent the rest of the game on the sidelines, with fans assuming the injury was not severe because he stayed with the team and walked off the field without help. His injury is arguably the most detrimental to the team with reports saying he will be out for an “extended period of time,” according to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.
But on Sept. 23, it was confirmed that Dart will be out for the season because of damage to his meniscus and MCL that will require a season-ending knee surgery, according to ESPN.
Nabers dislocated his shoulder during the game but was able to be popped back into place.
He was brought back into the game during New York’s next possession as the Giants were trying to recover from a 14-point deficit.
“My shoulder’s okay. Gonna get an X-ray on it, see what’s going on. I was out there, trying to just come back out. We had lost Jax, so I didn’t want to give the team another loss,” Nabers said after the game.
Both Burns’ and Thomas’ injuries were less severe, with Burns sustaining a low-ankle sprain and Thomas suffering a groin injury. They’re both listed as questionable to return for next week’s game along with Nabers, while Dart is listed as doubtful.
The real question for the Giants going into Week 3 is how they’re going to respond to Dart’s absence this season.
