Baruch College’s Bearcats continued their prowl going into Thanksgiving weekend.

Although most teams already ended their fall campaigns, the men’s and women’s basketball teams only started their seasons this month.

The teams played a total of nine matches over the span of two weeks. Both have a winning record of 4–3 as of Nov. 28.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball team performed with mixed results, winning three games but also losing two.

The Bearcats played their third match of the season in an away game against the St. Joseph’s College of Long Island Golden Eagles on Nov. 15. After a strong performance to start, the men struggled to score in the second half.

Emil Purisic and Sayeed Osorio scored four points in the last two minutes of the game. The defense prevented five shots from the Golden Eagles, keeping the game at 76-69 for the Bearcats’ second win on the season.

The team extended its winning streak to a third game against the Fairleigh Dickinson University Devils at the school’s Florham Campus on Nov. 18. The Bearcats’ defense limited the Devils to make only 29.8% of their shots, ending the game 52-44.

Osorio led the men in scoring with 12 points. Mohamed Gueye added 10 points, and Purisic contributed eight rebounds.

The Bearcats lost 73-58 to the Drew University Rangers on Nov. 19. While the Rangers had a strong performance in the first half, the Bearcats came close to bouncing back in the game’s final moments.

The team’s losing streak continued in a close 85-82 match with the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks, who forced the Nov. 22 game into overtime. The Bearcats jumped ahead early, at one point holding a 30-point lead in the second half. The Bearcats, however, couldn’t hang on.

The bench came through for the Bearcats, contributing 30 points in the team’s loss. Gueye led the men with 15 points. Jehmehl Fair and Purisic contributed 14 points and Michael Gannon added 12 points.

The men rebounded with an 80-71 away win against the SUNY Maritime College Privateers on Nov. 29. The Bearcat bench aided the victory, pouring in 51 of the team’s points.

Gerard Nicholson scored a personal intercollegiate career high with 22 points, going a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line.

The male team will face the Hunter College Hawks on Dec. 2.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball team struggled, opening their stretch with a whopping 61-30 loss to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Nov. 16.

But the women secured a victory on Nov. 18, winning 68-42 in an away game against the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Trailblazers. Mia Castillo led the team with 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Elissa Leung tied her career high with 17 points.

The victory was brief, however, as the team followed it with a two-game losing streak.

The women lost 83-54 against the SUNY Cobleskill Tigers on Nov. 19. Castillo led the team again with 25 points and six steals, while Leung added 15 points. Shantera Grant scored seven points, setting a career high.

The women played against St. Joseph’s College of Long Island on Nov. 26, losing 67-47.

Castillo led the team again with 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Rookie D’Andre McRae posted double-figure rebounds for the fifth time this season. Precious Mitchell added four points and seven rebounds off the bench.

The women’s team will also play against the Hunter College Hawks on Dec. 2.
