The Giants faced the Washington Commanders on Oct. 11 away at Northwest Stadium in Maryland. The game was close and ended in an overtime tie. With 12 seconds on the clock, the Commanders seemingly had the game in their hands but failed to call a time out, and the game ended in a tie.
The Giants had their fair share of opportunities to win, nevertheless they failed to break the tie. The Giants were down by two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but Jameis Winston was able to make some plays happen.
With two touchdowns from Isaiah Likely and Malik Nabers, New York was within field goal range to win with two minutes left in overtime.
They attempted to run the ball with Cam Skattebo, but he fumbled the ball, giving the Commanders their shot to win the game. Washington’s Jayden Daniels was coming off a dislocated elbow, which he suffered against the Cowboys in Week 2.
Despite this, he was able to lead the offense with over 300 total yards and two touchdowns. With the opportunity given to him by Skattebo’s fumble, Daniels marched down the field with the chance to win the game.
At 12 seconds left and zero timeouts, the Commanders failed to spike the ball in time, leading to the game ending in a tie. Daniels had held on to the ball with a running game clock, which was a major error, and it overshadowed his high performance.
Dan Quinn, the head coach for the Commanders, said to ABC News, “The sequencing of that does not fall on (Daniels)…It’s an outside throw or a clock — an out of bounds throw, or a clock. That has to come from me. I have to put him in that spot. I can do that earlier and we can finish the kick earlier. We don’t need to gain more yards.”
Although it seems very easy to blame the Commanders overtime miscue for the tie, the Giants also had many opportunities to win the game. New York missed two field goals and more notably, the Skattebo fumble stopped them from being able to put the game away.
Giants Head Coach Jim Harbaugh told Yahoo Sports, “It’s a heck of a lot better than a loss, but it’s not as good as a win…I know that just sounds so obvious, but that’s kind of how you feel. We’ll take it, we’ll take it right now.”
Both teams seemed to have their fair share of errors leading to unruly tie for the division rivals.
