The New York Yankees took the Subway Series against the Mets at Yankee Stadium, winning two of three games.
Yankees’ Spencer Jones opened the series with a line-drive single to left field, allowing Ben Rice to score. The Mets responded with Chrisopher Morel grounding out, allowing Mark Vientos to score and tie up the game at 1-1.
In the second inning, Cody Bellinger sparked the Yankees’ offense with a three-run home run, giving them a 4-1 lead. Rice added a solo home run in the fifth, bringing the Yankees’ lead to 5-1.
The Mets did not give up. In the seventh inning as A.J. Ewing hit a line-drive single, allowing Carson Benge to score. Marcus Semien followed with a sacrifice fly ball in the eighth inning, allowing Bo Bichette to score and cutting the Yankees’ lead to 5-3.
The Yankees answered back when Ryan McMahon hit an RBI single, allowing José Caballero to score and extending the lead to 6-3. Ewing ended the night with a solo home run, but it was not enough as the Mets fell to the Yankees 6-4.
Carlos Rodón had a stellar performance from the mound, allowing two runs and striking out eight over 6⅓ innings.
But the Mets did not back down, answering with a 12-2 blowout on Sept. 12.
Francisco Lindor led the Mets’ offense with a leadoff home run. Luis Torrens added a two-run home run in the second inning and Benge followed with a home run in the third, giving the Mets a 4-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Bellinger hit a line drive single and Paul Goldschmidt scored for the Yankees. Benge responded in the fifth and kept the Mets going, batting in Juan Soto to bring them up 5-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Bellinger gave the Yankees a home run to cut the score to 5-2. But the Mets were unstoppable. Torrens hit a double in the seventh inning, allowing Ewing and Semien to score.
Soto and Jared Young later homered, while Lindor hit his second home run of the game in the eighth inning with a grand slam, giving the Mets a dominating 12-2 win. The Mets recorded 14 hits, including six home runs, while the Yankees finished with seven hits. Yankees Gerrit Cole struggled on the mound, allowing five runs on nine hits over 4⅓ innings.
On the other hand, Mets rookie pitcher Zac Thornton kept the Yankees in check, allowing two runs on five hits throughout his seven innings.
With the series tied at one game apiece, the Yankees and Mets returned on Sept. 13 for the deciding game.
Rice had an early start with a leadoff home run and Austin Wells hit a solo home run in the third inning, giving the Yankees both their runs. The Mets struggled to generate offense as star players Lindor and Soto went 0-for-7 at bat with four strikeouts combined.
The Yankees shut out the Mets 2-0, having a strong pitching performance. Rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler allowed just one hit and struck out eight over six scoreless innings. Schlittler improved his record to 14-6 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.95.
The Subway Series highlighted the directions both teams are heading into as the regular season enters its final stretch. The Yankees have clinched a playoff spot, however for the Mets, this series was one of their last major matchups as they will miss the postseason.
