Apple CEO Tim Cook will step down from his role in September after nearly 15 years leading the technology company, marking a major leadership transition at one of the world’s most valuable corporations.
The company announced that Cook will remain involved with Apple as executive chairman of its board of directors.
Apple reported that the leadership change is part of a long-term succession plan for future management. In a statement, the company said its board unanimously approved the transition, with John Ternus, current Apple senior vice president of hardware engineering, expected to assume the role of CEO on Sept. 1.
Cook joined Apple in 1998 and became chief executive in 2011 following the death of co-founder Steve Jobs.
During his tenure, Apple grew into a $4 trillion company and defined its strategy in the post-Jobs era, according to CNN.
Under Cook’s leadership, Apple expanded its ecosystem of products and services while strengthening its position in global consumer technology markets.
Leadership transitions are closely watched by investors and analysts. Changes at the top of major technology firms can influence corporate strategy, product development priorities and long-term market positioning.
Cook also oversaw the introduction of several major product categories including the Apple Watch and AirPods, which became central parts of the company’s hardware portfolio.
More recently, Apple has increased investment in artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies as competition intensifies among major technology companies.
Ternus has worked at Apple for over two decades, playing a central role in developing many of Apple’s flagship products.
Ternus has overseen engineering teams responsible for devices, including the iPhone, iPad and Mac. His experience in hardware development has made him one of the most prominent executives within Apple’s leadership team.
In a letter to the Apple community, Cook described leading Apple as “the best job in the world” and expressed confidence in Ternus’ leadership. The announcement comes during a period of rapid technological transformation.
Apple has faced increasing pressure to expand its presence in AI as competitors such as Microsoft, Google and OpenAI introduce new AI-driven products and services.
President Donald Trump also commented on the announcement, praising Cook’s tenure in a post on Truth Social.
“Tim Cook had an AMAZING career, almost incomparable, and will go on and continue to do great work for Apple, and whatever else he chooses to work on,” Trump wrote.
The company has also experienced changes across its executive ranks over the past year as Apple prepares for its next phase of leadership and innovation.
Cook’s departure as CEO marks the end of a significant era for the company. As Ternus prepares to take over as CEO, the company faces both opportunities and challenges in a rapidly evolving technology landscape.
