Former President Barack Obama and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani made their first public appearance together in the South Bronx to promote free child care, where they read to a group of preschoolers and highlighted early education as a shared priority.
The visit, which was not publicly announced beforehand, took place at the Learning Through Play Pre-K Center. There, the two read “Alone and Together,” a book about the importance of community and sang “Wheels on the Bus” while engaging with the group of preschoolers.
The visit comes shortly after Mamdani reached his 100th day in office and continues his efforts to advocate for the implementation of NYC’s first free, full-day 2K program.
This proposal is part of his broader plan to use the government’s power to help the city’s working class. One way Mamdani has aimed to achieve this is by reducing child care costs in the city.
The Learning Through Play Pre-K Center is part of the city’s free preschool program, which Mamdani has focused on expanding during his first 100 days in office by increasing the number of seats available to children and supporting new learning centers.
These efforts are intended to create a universal child care system throughout the city to support children and families.
There also has been emphasis on helping the neighborhoods that need the greatest support, where families are struggling economically. By working with more providers in these areas, the Mamdani administration hopes to ensure families are able to find a center near them without facing long waitlists.
This approach is aimed at reducing the barriers that prevent working parents from accessing reliable child care for their children.
“We have been deliberate about how we approach early care and education and are taking meaningful steps to put more seats closer to the families that need them most,” NYC Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels said in a press release.
“They are the foundation every child needs to thrive, and we are committed to making sure no family in our system has to look too far to find a high-quality program for their child.”
Obama and Mamdani also had a private conversation where they talked about Mamdani’s vision for the city and the importance of having accessible child care.
Obama also thanked the teachers at the Learning Through Play Pre-K Center and endorsed Mamdani’s child care proposals.“This is what we need, making an investment in these amazing kids,” Obama said as he left the center.
