In the corner of the Clivner Field Plaza, where Jimmy’s House once stood, is the new restaurant Mala Town.
Mala Town is a franchise that has restaurants all over the country and serves malatang food – traditional Sichuan street food.
Jimmy’s has not mentioned whether it will be moving the small business to a different location or if they are permanently closed for good.
Serving the Baruch College community, Jimmy’s became a staple meal for many students.
Baruch student Justin Morales said he appreciated the old restaurants affordability. “It was pretty solid; they had a versatile lunch special menu at a reasonable price,” Morales said. Mala Town differs from Jimmy’s with a pay-by-pound style. It offers a variety of different foods to choose from and build your own plate.
Between 2023 and 2024, there were reported to be 66,875 establishments in New York City opened and 64,442 that were closed.
With the constant flow of businesses launching and shuttering in the city, Mala Town will attempt to see if Baruch students can represent a significant enough customer base to keep the restaurant open.
