Bearcat Beat: Men’s, women’s basketball teams off to hot starts

After the 82-63 blowout win over Kean University in its season opener, the Baruch College men’s basketball currently sits at a season record of 4-2. This record puts the team at 5th place in the CUNYAC Standings due to their no games played against conference opponents.

After falling to Worcester State University, Baruch participated in the New York University Tip-Off Tournament where they took on Regis College and New York University. In their matchup with Regis, Baruch opened up the game with a 21-2 run and gave the Regis Pride no chance of putting up a comeback. Bryler Paige led the Bearcats with 13 points in the victory. In the 83-70 win over the NYU Violets, Paige led the team once again in points with 18 and the supporting cast around him helped drive Baruch to win the NYU Tip-Off Tournament. Paige was voted the tournament MVP.

Baruch’s next two games came against The College at Brockport and William Paterson University, where the Bearcats split the two games bringing their record to 4-2. After suffering the most recent loss to William Paterson, Baruch now turns to their first two CUNYAC games. They will face off with the City College of New York in the Arc Arena on Dec. 4 and Hunter College on Dec. 7 at Hunter College.

The women’s basketball team has started its season with a 1-3 record, the team’s sole win coming against a match with Yeshiva University. The following two games came against Manhattanville College and St. Joseph’s College, Long Island. In the matchup with the Valiants, Baruch suffered a 97-50 loss in the Arc Arena. Sophomore Melinda Spahiu scored 20 points and tallied three assists and steals. In their trip to Patchogue, New York, to play St. Joseph’s, Baruch was dealt a devastating loss to the Golden Eagles. In the 68-24 loss, Spahiu once again led the team with nine points.

The women now look to their first two CUNYAC opponents as they set to face off with the City College of New York and Hunter College.

Both of Baruch’s swimming and diving teams have gotten off to a good start this season, as the men are sitting at 4-0 and the women are 3-2. In each of their two previous contests, they faced off against CUNYAC opponent the College of Staten Island and out-of-league opponent the College of New Rochelle. Both teams earned dominating wins over rival CSI as the women came out on top with 107-52 and the men ended with 117-86.

The women who were highlighted in the match were Andrea Gasic, Yee Chung Phang, Asimina Hamakiotes and Onika George. The men who stood out were Erich Moeslinger, Matthew Greenfield, Evan Nikolic and Juan Bedoya.

In their out-of-league matchup, the Bearcats dominated once again. The women resulted in a 169-47 victory, while the men came out on top with 146-62. The women were led by Gasic and Phang once again, with the support of Amanda Lee. For the men, Bedoya and Nikolic each finished first in three separate races. Swimming and diving hope that they can continue to dominate their seasons after these two convincing wins.
