Cristiano Ronaldo scored an unforgettable bicycle kick in Porto, leading Portugal to a terrifying 5-1 scoreboard against Poland in the Union of European Football Associations Nations League game on Nov. 15 on the UEFA Nations League group stage.
The first half of the game was tight between both teams. Shots were being made from in and out the box and interceptions took place among the defenders. However, Portugal managed to open the scoreboard in the second half with a header from Raphael Leão assisted by Nuno Mendez.
Then, 72 minutes in, Ronaldo scored a panenka penalty goal. The ball went straight into the back of the net as Poland’s goalkeeper, Marcin Bułka, leaned towards the right side. In the euphoria of the celebration, Ronaldo celebrated his 909 goal with the stadium’s ball boys, creating unforgettable memories for the kids.
Then 79 minutes in, Bruno Fernandes, a Manchester United player, shot a missile towards Marcin which ended up hitting the goalpost and bouncing on the floor—making it 3-0 in favor of Portugal.
At 83 minutes, Pedro Neto scored a stretched goal with Ronaldo’s assistance. Guided by Ronaldo, Chelsea’s number seven filtered a pass towards the box which roughly made it 4-0 against Poland—raising chants for Ronaldo’s name in the stadium as the victory was assured 10 minutes before the whistle.
However, Ronaldo did not stop there. In a slow motion centered ball by Vitor “Vittinha” Ferreira, PSG’s midfielder, Ronaldo turned his back on Marcin and without thinking twice his leg raised, hitting the ball toward the right side of the net, causing the stadium to scream as Ronaldo ran towards his fans to jump and do his iconic celebration.
Ronaldo showed passion for his country and reminded everyone that at 39 years old he can still play football at the highest level.
“My retirement will happen, could be one or two years… I don’t know, we will see,” Ronaldo said in an interview days after his match.
“1000 career goals would be nice to achieve… but no, I’m not even considering focusing on that target,” Ronaldo admitted on Instagram according to Fabrizio Romano, a highly recognized sports journalist.
While it’s true that there is not much time left to enjoy Ronaldo’s magic, it is important to remember his legacy.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s career has been painted by relentless effort, from the streets of Madeira to the Champions League grand stage. More than being an athlete, he is a force of nature that will move upcoming generations of football. His performance during the Nov. 15 match is another reminder that greatness is built off perseverance.
