Taylor Swift made an Instagram post announcing her endorsement of Kamala Harris and her stance on the 2024 election on Sept. 10. She started by calling for people to research the positions that each candidate takes on important topics.
She then addressed the recent spread of AI images, which used her resemblance to promote the Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump.
On the social media platform “Truth Social,” Trump posted a collage of AI-generated photos where Taylor Swift and her fans, known as the “Swifties,” showed support for his campaign. The AI images caused an uproar in her fandom, especially with the earlier involvement of AI images using the singer-songwriter’s identity in an erotic fashion. It also caused immense confusion amongst the public, especially for those who are unfamiliar with Swift’s political views.
Swift has made her beliefs known through her artistry and social media platforms. In 2018, she endorsed Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen Jr., a Democrat. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” Swift said on Instagram.
She also praised Kamala Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, for his dedication to fighting for women’s rights, IVF and LGBTQ+ rights. These views are a stark contrast to those made by Trump and his party.
Reactions to Swift’s endorsement have been met with mixed reactions. Harris posted Swift’s picture with the caption “Love you queen” on her Instagram story. Walz’s reaction was caught live by MSNBC, and he was grateful for the endorsement by the popstar. CNN reports that Trump was unaware that the images were AI-generated and claims that AI is dangerous for this reason.
Swift encouraged people to register to vote and to find early voting dates. The significance of her endorsement comes with the prospect that the race is extremely close.
National polls put Harris ahead by around 3%, with the possibility of her winning swing states. Swift’s endorsement may influence undecided voters to vote in support of the Democratic campaign.
Swift signs off her Instagram post with a joke referencing sexist jokes made at her expense. “With love and hope, Taylor Swift Childless Cat Lady.”
