Rihanna had fans buzzing about her pregnancy announcement during her Super Bowl LVII halftime show performance. The Barbadian singer-songwriter had not performed live since the 2018 Grammy Awards and for her first performance back, she decided on a simple approach.

Throughout her performance, Rihanna highlighted her baby bump while reminding viewers of her incredible vocals. However, for some fans this may not have been enough to capture their hearts. Some fans expected more from her 12-song set list which included classics like “B*tch Better Have My Money,” “Umbrella” and “Where Have You Been.” Others were ecstatic to see their favorite singer back on stage. Even celebrities took to social media to share their support.

“Remembering good times and wishing you the best vibes for tonight’s show, Rih! @rihanna #SBLVII #AppleMusicHalftime,” Shakira tweeted with a photo of herself and Rihanna attached.

Even with all the love she received, in comparison to other halftime performances, some say this one may have been a little lackluster.

Over the years we have seen performers utilize the entire 120 yards for multiple set designs, outfit changes and insane stunts such as jumping off the stadium into the field. Some artists rode in on a giant lion or a golden throne, there have been dancing marching bands and overall high movement, high energy performances.

On the other hand, Rihanna’s set stood the same throughout, her outfit never changed, the dance moves were quite repetitive and not to mention she did not invite a special guest. In addition to the fact that we have not seen a live performance or a new song by Rihanna in so long, with exception to the several songs featured in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” it is understandable why people expected more.

“Rihanna’s Super Bowl performance is going down as one of the most BORING performances in history just disrespectful [to] my eyes,” an unhappy viewer wrote on Twitter.

Yet true fans did not care about any of this, after all its Rihanna, the Caribbean Queen herself. Despite some negative comments, the show received an overwhelming number of positive comments. All her fans appreciated watching her sing the classic songs many of them enjoyed listening to in the early 2000s. There is no doubt that Rihanna had fans singing along and feeling nostalgia during her calmer performance. For this reason, many appreciated her performance’s simplicity. She did not need the extravagant sets or grand entrance to make the show great. Rihanna’s ability to take this approach during an event known for its over-the-top performances and still have fans talk about how amazing she was is a reflection of her unbelievable talent and the impact she has had on her fan base throughout the years.
