After 3.5 years at The Ticker, including 1.5 years as copy chief, I’m ending my time at this beloved student publication.
For nearly 100 years, The Ticker has reported on major events to students. I have no doubt it will continue to do so.
I was co-editor-in-chief of my high school’s newspaper and loved editing. I wanted to continue editing in college because it gave me a sense of familiarity in the unfamiliar environment that was Baruch College. I joined in December 2022 as a copy editor under then-Copy Chief Gabriel Rivera.
Copy editing became part of my weekly routine and helped me track how many weeks were left in the semester. AP Style rules were unexpectedly easy to pick up. Time blurred; before I knew it, The Ticker would be producing its final issue.
In January 2025, after working under Gabriel, Atifah Osmani and Dua Jafri, I joined the elite roster of copy chiefs. I didn’t envision myself as the copy chief at first, but with the camaraderie of my Ticker colleagues, I found myself at home in the position.
I created new training documents and revitalized older ones for copy editors. After The Ticker’s layout nights, I would leave the office hoping readers would enjoy the next issue’s articles and back page puzzles.
I end my time at The Ticker with over 1,400 articles edited. I leave my successor, Tiffany Tan, with the most hardworking and diligent copy editors I’ve had the honor to work with. I’m eternally grateful for their nights of hunching over Microsoft Word and AP Style documents and dealing with moving deadlines, just to bring students articles written by their peers. To my copy editors, thank you for your endless contributions to The Ticker. I loved working with all of you, and I admire how you’ve welcomed The Ticker into your own weekly routines. I hope you find success and happiness wherever you go. Tiffany, there are joys and challenges in being the copy chief, but I trust you’ll steer the copy editing department to new heights.
Some weeks will be tougher than others, but The Ticker will always have your back. Do your best, and everything will fall into place.
Thank you to Editor-in-Chief Sonia Kalo and Managing Editor Irza Waraich for smoothly running The Ticker and its operations. Seeing them handle matters with their unmatched level of attention and objectivity inspired me to do the same in my own department. Their leadership skills will continue to serve them well as they follow their dreams.
I’ll miss having classes with Business Manager Justina Dodani. I didn’t understand a thing in the class we shared, but having her camaraderie made it much more bearable. I’ll also miss discussing the latest “Single’s Inferno” episodes with her.
Graphics Editor Richard Wen lifted my mood with their infectious energy and passion for their team’s beautiful graphics.
Photography Editor Jumaane Millette and Multimedia Editor Ashley Kodowa always provided a grounded outlook when I came to them for advice, while Richard gave me the confidence to make decisions with my instinct.
Each of The Ticker’s sections flourished under their respective editors, and reading their weekly topics emails reminded me how hard they work around the clock to provide their writers with article ideas and feedback.
I could talk to News Editor Karizma Jernigan about anything; her steady presence left me calmer than before our conversations. She encouraged me to focus on my future and to take care of my health in the process. I know she’ll find great success as The Ticker’s next editor-in-chief.
From afar, I watched Opinions Editor Joonwoo Kim search The New York Times and emails from CUNY for weekly editorial topics. Even under stress, he never wavered and let his rationality guide his decisions. It’s an admirable trait that will serve him well in the future as he advances to greater heights.
Business Editor Emma Delahanty always had a story to share with everyone, and I admire how well-traveled she is. She encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and sign up for a journalism class, and I’ll always be glad I did.
She gave the business section a fresh look with articles about local businesses, trends surrounding the economy and panels at Baruch.
Arts & Culture Editor Zoe Del Percio-Evans also saw her section flourish, with several columns bringing some under-the-radar reads, songs and restaurant reviews to readers. It takes a remarkable person to manage a consistently popular section. I have no doubt she’ll bring The Ticker more recognition as the next managing editor.
Thank you to the previous Arts & Culture Editor Sarah Gabriel, who also welcomed me to The Ticker with open arms. Her easygoing disposition made me feel more at home in my early days as copy chief.
The Science & Technology section prospered under then-editor Julia Aiello and editor Manish Kumar. I’ll never forget their enthusiasm toward the field and their writers, Manish’s invites to side quests and Julia’s unparalleled humor and attitude toward life.
Sports Editors Victoria Lisi and Ashanti Charon supplied their helpful guidance and advice when I edited sports articles.
Their patience motivated me to learn more about sports, letting me experience the unbridled enthusiasm of the sports world and its writers.
Thank you to Advertising Director Reagan Rawner for livening up layout nights. She gave wise life advice and fascinating life stories.
Thank you to Production Assistant Andrea Shi and previous assistant Carol Chen for working diligently to inform readers about Baruch events and open internships, as well as overseeing the crossword and sudoku puzzles for the back page of the newspaper.
Finally, thank you to Human Resource Director Fawzia Begum and previous director Michael Berger for taking care of the team and providing opportunities for professional development.
I’d like to give a shoutout to the Snapshots yearbook team for their diligence and creativity.
My gratitude extends to everyone who’s read The Ticker. Without you, there is no newspaper.
