The Ticker has given me so much that I will be forever grateful for.
Firstly, The Ticker gave me my career. When I entered Baruch College, I didn’t know what I wanted to do or what I wanted to major in. I first found The Ticker table at a club fair where I briefly met then-Editor-in-Chief Emanuela Gallo. I attended a general interest meeting, where I felt brave enough to sign up to write for arts & culture. I knew I liked writing, so I figured I’d give it a try. Working on my first article made me fall in love with writing and reporting. Shortly after writing my first article, I switched my major to journalism and decided to pursue a career as a reporter.
I was given the surprising opportunity to be The Ticker’s news editor starting spring 2024. I’m grateful to then-News Editor Nicole Bryk for trusting me to be her successor after a few short weeks of knowing me. I had so much love and respect for The Ticker just as a contributing writer and never imagined that I’d get to be an integral part of its inner workings.
I settled into my role as news editor with the support of then-Editor-in-Chief Maya Demchak-Gottlieb and then-Managing Editor Suporna Das.
They were incredibly supportive of me and believed in me when I wasn’t sure I was qualified enough to become managing editor. I’d like to thank everyone from The Ticker class of 2024 for their encouragement and for opening up their space to me.
The Ticker gave me friendship.I am not a very social or outgoing person, so The Ticker’s collaborative and team-oriented structure was very intimidating to me. I was terrified to speak and take up space. I soon learned I wasn’t the only one who ever felt that way.
I’ve met some of the best people and made, hopefully, life-long friendships during my time at The Ticker.
Being managing editor was the best job I ever had. I learned so much about myself, about friendship and what it means to love something enough to trust that it’ll be able to thrive without you.
I also met the best officemate anyone could ask for, Akilah Campbell. Akilah, thank you for being a bright presence in our office and in my life.
I’d like to give a huge thank you to everyone from The Ticker class of 2025 for giving me the best year at Baruch and for allowing me to learn and grow alongside you.
Stepping up as the editor-in-chief this past year was one of the most terrifying and challenging experiences of my life. You can never truly feel prepared enough for a task so great.
I used to worry that I would never be able to live up to the editors-in-chief that I’d known and known of. I was afraid of letting The Ticker down, but I’ve finally realized that the only way to let The Ticker down was to stop caring.
Thankfully, I was lucky enough to learn from and work alongside the most caring person ever. Maya, thank you for your expert guidance, endless kindness, and unyielding faith in me. It was impossible to imagine The Ticker without you, but The Ticker will never truly be without you because just as I’ve done, the EICs after me will also carry on your legacy.
Thank you to The Ticker class of 2026 for entrusting me to lead you and for being part of The Ticker’s legacy.
The Ticker has always and will continue to keep bringing people together, forming strong relationships and creating irreplaceable memories.
I will forever be grateful to The Ticker for connecting me with everyone I’ve met and had the chance to work with over the years. It’s truly been an honor to get to lead this amazing organization. The Ticker will always hold a special place in my heart.
A very wise editor-in-chief once said that the best part about The Ticker is the people. Thank you to all the people who made The Ticker so special to me.
