Welcome to In Tune with WBMB, a weekly column where a member of the station covers a new track from the underground. This week’s article is written by Victoria Zima.
“Pumpkin” by Been Stellar combines nostalgic tones of the bass and powerful electric guitar chords along with lyrics that seem all too familiar.
Been Stellar is a rock band based in New York City. Their album “Scream from New York, NY” was released in June 2024 with a revival rock atmosphere, featuring their most popular song, “Pumpkin.” Sonically a different take from the other tracks on the album, the song has a steady and an almost “going through the motions” guitar tempo — exemplifying the message of the song: doing what’s familiar to distract from the vicissitudes of it all.
Each instrument tells a different part of the story and there is also no repeating chorus. Only the final remarks of the song being “Waiting on the people to come outside” repeating twice show how familiarity holds to the very end of the song even when you may think it’s over.
Ultimately, through the song’s incredible but melancholic familiar feel, story progression through imagery and undeniable emotional vulnerability, the impact is clear: all two million streamers can relate all too well.
