The 2026 World Baseball Classic is off and running, with Team USA’s MLB-dominant team taking center stage! Led by New York Yankees and Team USA captain and MVP Aaron Judge, Team USA has a star-studded team looking to capture the elusive WBC championship, which it last won in 2017. The roster features Detroit Tigers ace pitcher Tarik Skubal, Philadelphia Phillies superstar first baseman Bryce Harper, designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, Seattle Mariners MVP runner-up catcher Cal Raleigh and many other talented ballplayers positioning the USA as a force to be reckoned with in the first Classic tournament since 2023.
Three years ago, Japan and the current Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and lead-off batter phenom Shohei Ohtani struck out former USA captain and former Los Angeles Angels teammate Mike Trout to emphatically capture the WBC trophy.
With Judge taking over as captain and Ohtani only hitting this time for Japan, this is one of their best opportunities to bring the USA national glory for the second straight month after the USA men’s and women’s hockey teams both won gold in the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics in February.
The USA began the tournament on March 6 with a matchup against Brazil.
Judge made an early statement with a first-inning two-run home run, Milwaukee Brewers infielder Brice Turang cleared the bases with a three-run double to up the score to 7-1 in the fifth inning, and the team blew the game wide open in the ninth inning with a multitude of singles and walks in the 15-5 win.
During their second matchup a day later against the team across the pond, Great Britain, the USA was surprisingly down 1-0 early on a rare leadoff home run allowed by Skubal to Boston Red Sox infielder Nate Eaton.
However, Team USA showed its expected prowess midway through the game with a five-run inning. Schwarber’s high-flying three-run blast brought the battle back in the USA’s favor and turned the game around for a 9-1 victory.
It is widely expected that the U.S. will dominate Pool B, which consists of Italy, Mexico, Brazil and Great Britain.
With more matchups to come over the next few weeks, the potential rematch vs. Japan to avenge the 2023 defeat is certainly an enticing one that fans and players would look forward to.
However, the U.S. must assert itself as the baseball powerhouse it is hyped up to be to reach that ultimate stage.
So far, the U.S. is living up to those expectations, but there are still more WBC games approaching the team and the plethora of fans behind them are counting on them to achieve victory.
