Fans of the New York Mets are wondering what the team will look like this 2026 season, as the Mets have lost and gained more talent during the offseason.
At the start of the offseason, many Mets players hit the free agency market, with their two biggest stars, Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso, opting out of their contracts.
Diaz signed a three-year $69 million contract with the back-to-back world series champions the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is considered the best relief pitcher in MLB and a part of the Mets roster for seven seasons.
Alonso, the next big name of the offseason, signed a deal with the Baltimore Orioles to a five-year $155 million contract.
He was drafted by the Mets in the 2016 draft and was a free agent in the 2024 offseason, choosing to opt out of his contract early in the offseason. This news devastated Mets fans as many thought he was going to be a Met forever.
Following these two major departures, the Mets decided to trade Jeff McNeil to the Oakland Athletics to receive minor league right-handed pitcher Yordan Rodriguez and cash.
Brandon Nimmo was traded to the Texas Rangers, who will receive second baseman Marcus Semien, an elite defender who is coming off a disappointing offensive year.
The Mets signed right-handed relief pitcher Luke Weaver to a two-year $22 million contract. The former New York Yankee, coming off the 2025 season with a 3.62 Earned Run Average, dominated early in the season. The Mets continue to add to the bullpen by signing Devin Williams, a former New York Yankee who had a struggling season finish with a 4.79 ERA, to a three-year $51 million contract.
They also acquired Jorge Polanco, a former Seattle Mariners coming off a strong performance after an injury and finishing the season with a 0.265 batting average with 26 home runs and 78 runs batted in. Polanco was signed to a two-year $40 million contract.
The Mets traded away second baseman Luisangel Acuna and Right-Handed Pitcher Truman Pauley to the Chicago White Sox to acquire Outfielder Luis Robert Jr. who is coming off a mediocre season with a 0.223 batting average, 14 home runs and 53 RBI.
After the Mets failed to get Kyle Tucker within 24 hours, they signed Bo Bichette to a three-year $126 million contract with an opt-out after years one and two. Bichette, the former Blue Jay, is coming off a World Series appearance and had a strong 2025 with a 0.311 batting average, 18 home runs and 94 RBI.
The Mets agreed to trade away Brandon Sproats and Jett Williams, two of their top prospects, with the Milwaukee Brewers to acquire RHP Freddy Peralta and with an ERA 2.70 and RHP Tobias Myers. Peralta has an 2.7, ERA and Myers has a 3.55 ERA.
While the MLB offseason is not over, the Mets still need to address the holes in their roster before the start of the 2026 season. With the World Baseball Classic and spring training on the horizon, the Mets are expected to continue rebuilding.
