Just a short walk from Baruch College’s campus sits Greenhill Coffee, a welcoming neighborhood cafe located at 421 2nd Ave. For students looking to fuel up before class, take a study break or grab a quick bite, Greenhill Coffee offers a warm atmosphere, quality drinks and affordable food options all in one place.
Greenhill Coffee is a halal spot, which makes it stand out among nearby cafes. From the moment people walk in, the space feels calm and inviting. The cafe is clean, cozy and perfect for both quick stops and longer stays. It even has a couch! Whether people grab something on the go or sit down to unwind, it’s a welcoming place to feel right at home in.
The 12-ounce traditional Yemeni Mufawar hot coffee was $5.49. It was extremely hot, so waiting a couple of minutes before sipping was necessary. Once it cooled down, the flavor was incredible. The Mufawar coffee was rich, smooth and aromatic, with warm spices like cardamom, cinnamon and cloves blended with milk. It felt comforting, flavorful and much more complex than regular coffee. It’s the kind of drink worth savoring rather than rushing through.
Greenhill Coffee also offers fairly priced food, which is always a plus for students. Its egg and cheese bagel costs $5.99 and is made with high-quality, cage-free eggs and melted cheddar cheese. It’s a filling, simple and solid breakfast option. Greenhill Coffee also has a variety of outstanding pastries.
The almond croissant, which was $5, was easily one of the highlights of the visit. It had almonds sprinkled on top with a light sugar coating and the inside was a sweet spread that pulled all those flavors together in perfect harmony. The croissant was flaky, sweet and tasted fresh.
Another thing worth mentioning is the customer service. No matter the time of day, the staff is friendly, patient and welcoming. They also offer halal sandwiches, giving students even more options beyond coffee and pastries.
One major highlight and a first for “Food For Thought” is that Greenhill Coffee offers a 10% student discount.
Overall, Greenhill Coffee is a wonderful find close to campus. This local spot with warm and thoughtfully-made food and drinks is absolutely worth a visit.
Until next time, keep eating with thought.
