The MLS season has come to an end. In the last game of the season, as decision day approached, most teams had already qualified for the Audi Major League Soccer Cup Playoffs.
The Eastern and Western Conference sides still have four teams left, two wild card spots and one match against the eighth and ninth place teams.
The match took place on Oct. 22. Eighth place Chicago Fire play against ninth place Orlando City for the Eastern side, and eighth place Portland Timbers will be playing against ninth place Real Salt Lake for the Western side. This will decide who will have a chance to win the MLS Cup.
New York City FC is now the only team in New York that could bring a trophy back home to the city for the 2025 season. The New York Yankees and the Mets have been eliminated from the MLB postseason, the Brooklyn Nets and the Knicks have been eliminated from the playoffs and the New York Red Bulls failed to grab a spot in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. The pressure is on for the team. Can they bring it home?
NYCFC finished playing their final game against the Seattle Sounders on Oct. 18 at Citi Field. Unfortunately, the ‘Boys in Blue’ failed to secure the win as they lost 2-1 at home.
This should be a wake-up call as they head into the playoffs. It has been determined that NYCFC and Charlotte FC will play against each other in a best-of-3 format. NYCFC will face Charlotte FC away for Game 1 and Game 3 at Bank of America Stadium, while Game 2 will be at Yankee Stadium. This run in the tournament will be difficult for NYCFC, as they have not yet won an away match against Charlotte FC.
As of this moment, the team is on a losing streak, and fans are worried about how long they will last in the tournament.
Last season, the ‘Boys in Blue’ made it to the quarter-final of the tournament after getting knocked out by the New York Red Bulls. This season will be different with a new manager and a team of many young players. As of right now, they hope to bring the cup home since winning it back in 2021.
