That September breeze is back, which means that NFL season is also here. On Aug. 4, the defending champions, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Dallas Cowboys faced off to start the season. This was a great matchup, with both teams having so much history and tension. The game was bound to have some fireworks to kick off the season.
The Cowboys started by going down the field and scoring on their first drive. A big 32-yard pass to wide receiver CeeDee Lamb set up the Cowboys in the red zone. They then handed it off to new running back Javonte Williams for the first touchdown of this NFL season. The Eagles wasted no time in answering as they went right down the field and scored to tie the game 7-7.
The Eagles had a couple of big runs in the drive to set up Jalen Hurts for a rushing touchdown, picking up right where he left off last season. In the second quarter, the two teams kept going back and forth with the Cowboys, getting another touchdown from Williams to make it 14-7. Then the Eagles went down the field picking off the Cowboys’ defense, leading to Hurts’ second rushing touchdown of the game, which tied the game at 14. The Eagles slowed down the pace with a big red zone stand to force a Dallas field goal.
The Dallas defense couldn’t stop the high-powered Eagles offense as Hurts hit Jahan Dotson for a big 51 yard pass down the field. Then Saquon Barkley ran it into the endzone for an Eagles touchdown.
The Cowboys would answer with a field goal as the game went into halftime with the score being 21-20 Eagles. The only score in the second half came from an Eagles field goal in the third quarter. There was a weather delay late in the third, but when the game resumed the two defenses really stepped up. There were some key drops from Lamb which resulted in the Cowboys losing the season opener 24-20. Many didn’t expect this game to be as close as it was. The question is, did the eagles show a bit of a Super Bowl hangover, or did the cowboys put up a fight? There’s going to be a lot of football to answer those questions. But if this game is any indication of what’s to come this season, then this is bound to be a thriller of an NFL season.
