It used to be called being a hopeless romantic, but with “A Matter of Time,” Laufey redefines that classic notion into something Gen Z might call “yearning.” Laufey, known for blending genres and delving into the depths of human emotion, has released an album that captures the intensity of love and heartbreak, offering a modern take on timeless feelings.
“A Matter of Time” shouldn’t be mistaken for an album solely about romantic love. While many tracks reflect the stages of falling in and out of love, they also explore themes of self-discovery and identity, which are deeply rooted in Laufey’s own life experiences.
It’s a bittersweet record, with heart-dropping melodies and melancholy lyrics that linger long after the music ends. Laufey herself has described the genre of her third album as “whatever came to my heart.”
Indeed, her newest work isn’t just about uncovering untapped emotions. The 14-track album blends her love for jazz, classical music and theatrical storytelling — showcased vividly in the music video for “Lover Girl,” the album’s second track.
“Lover Girl” explores the irony of unexpectedly falling for someone and how the very emotions once mocked can suddenly dominate everyday life. Its bossa nova rhythm complements the song’s witty and self-aware lyrics. “Lover Girl” is perhaps the album’s most popular track, amassing over 41 million streams on Spotify and being used as the teaser song for the album announcement.
Perhaps the most poignant track on the album is one centered on self-love. “Snow White” delves into the erosion of self-worth under the weight of societal beauty standards.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Laufey said that writing the song was deeply important to her. She hoped to leave listeners with a sense that they’re not alone, no matter what they’re going through.“So many of these songs are just transcribed from my conversations with friends,” Laufey told Rolling Stone. “I hope people don’t relate, because it’s not fun to relate to, but if they do, I hope they feel seen.”
Laufey released her album in late August following the wrap of her “A Night at The Symphony” tour with multiple orchestras, where the harmony of numerous instruments truly complemented her persona.
Laufey teased a few songs during her orchestra tour, including “Forget-me-not,” a song she wrote as a love letter to Iceland, her home country, that features lyrics in Icelandic.
She’s now kicking off her arena tour this September. Fans are already buzzing about which songs they’ll stay quiet for to hear the Icelandic singer’s enchanting voice in its purest form.
