The Yankees lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2, during CUNY Day on May 3. The Yankees suffered more injuries during the game with the loss.
CUNY Students could secure tickets through FEVO with the code CUNY25. Students could purchase tickets for themselves, friends and family. There was also a free hat giveaway for attendees with a CUNY ticket.
In an email to students, Ben Powell, an account executive for Yankees Group Sales, said CUNY students can use Fevo to secure tickets discounted up to 50% for select games throughout the rest of the season.
The game started with a home run from Aaron Judge at the bottom of the first inning, which was quickly followed by José Caballero scoring at the top of the second.
At the bottom of the fifth, Austin Wells hit a home run, securing the Yankees their second point of the game. During the top of the eighth, Chandler Simpson and Brandon Lowe secured points for their teams, putting the Rays at three points overall.
According to the MLB, the game lineup was Cody Bellinger in center field, Judge in right field, Ben Rice on first base, Paul Goldschmidt as designated hitter, Wells in center field, Anthony Volpe as the shortstop, Jasson Domínguez in left field, Oswaldo Cabrera on third base and Jorbit Vivas on second base.
During the game, Volpe was injured but stayed in the game. He was swapped with Oswald Peraza on May 4, according to the MLB.
Other Yankees that are currently injured are Jazz Chisholm Jr., Giancarlo Stanton, Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil, Jake Cousins, Clayton Beeter, Jonathan Loáisiga, Scott Effross and Jonathan Trey, “JT” Brubaker, according to the MLB.
The Yankees have had more injuries than most teams for the past few seasons. “The Yankees’ one-season Injury Index (128) was one of the highest of the past half decade,” according to ESPN.
Since 2019, the Yankees have ranked second, fourth, fifth, 18th and first in the injury index. Notably, in 2022, the only year they did not rank above average in injuries, they won 99 games and ultimately advanced to the American League Championship Series.
This has affected the team’s ability to perform. According to ESPN, “the average team lost an estimated 5.5 wins above replacement (WAR) last season, and it’s the marginal numbers — above that number — that start to become a differentiator. The Yankees lost an estimated 14.7 Wins Above Replacement because of Injured List placements last season, or 9.2 WAR above average.”
With the Yankees’ loss to the Rays, it has yet to be seen what they plan to do to prevent more injuries and make up for the currently injured players, but something needs to be done before the season progresses and gets more serious.
