Aaron Rodgers was thought to be the answer to creating a Super Bowl-winning team. However, after two years his stint in New York is over.
Rodgers joined the New York Jets in 2023. The Jets organization thought adding Rodgers to the team would improve their odds at entering the Super Bowl. The Jets had a stout defense led by Quinnen Williams and C.J. Mosley and it was assumed that Rodgers could be the final all-star to complete a strong team. However, Rodgers fell short of the organization’s high hopes, and the Jets told the 41-year-old that he was not returning to the organization next season.
The Jets released a statement saying, “Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback,” on Feb. 13. Last season, Rodgers had a top three best season in Jets history by season totals. He had 3,987 yards and 28 touchdowns which was eighth and tied for seventh in the league respectively.
In his first game as a Jet in week one of the 2023 season, he went down four plays into the game, and he suffered a season ending Achilles tendon tear against the Buffalo Bills. He attempted to come back later in the season, and he was seen practicing, but he never returned. The Jets finished 7-10.
The Jets acquired Rodgers in 2023 from the Green Bay Packers in a trade.
The Jets are going in a new direction at quarterback with their new head coach Aaron Glenn and new general manager Darren Mougey. The Jets will look different next year with their new offensive coordinator in Tanner Engstrand and a largely new coaching staff.
Glenn is a former Jets Player; he was drafted in 1994 in the first round and he played for the Jets from 1994-2001. He was a three-time pro bowler and he recorded 41 interceptions in his 15-year career. “His partnership with Coach Glenn will revitalize this organization,” Woody Johnson said about Mougey.
Glenn went back to the motor city to hire Engstrand, who was the Lions passing game coordinator. Engstrand helped the Lions become the NFC top seed and second in passing yards with 4,718. Engstrand helped the Lions become one of the most proficient passing offenses in the NFL.
The Jets have the seventh pick in the 2025 NFL draft. The NFL draft starts on April 24 and the Jets could draft one of the top QBs in the draft. There are two top QBs in this year’s NFL draft. The QBs are Cam Ward from Miami and Shedeur Sanders from Colorado. The Jets have a good chance to pick one of them and start the new administration with a good steppingstone to the playoffs.
Rodgers will be a future Hall of Famer after he retires, but there is speculation of different teams Rodgers could finish out his career with.
