Democratic candidate for the 2024 presidential election and Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, was featured on the cover of Vogue on Oct. 11.
However, this isn’t the first time she has been featured in the magazine; she was previously on the cover of Vogue in January 2021.
But her first appearance is nothing compared to her second appearance in the magazine.
Harris’ first Vogue cover was colorful.
The print cover displays Harris in jeans, Converse, and a blazer with a pink and green background referring to the sorority she was a part of, Alpha Kappa Alpha.
The first cover also featured Harris standing in front of a blurred yellow background in a baby blue suit with her arms crossed and a smile on her face. People were not fans of these images.
“It was a cover image that, in effect, called Harris by her first name without invitation,” Robin Givhan, a senior critic at The Washington Post, said.
People felt that this cover made her feel all too familiar and not very presidential. After the controversy over her first Vogue shoot, Harris has made a comeback with a different approach.
In her second cover, Harris is seen sitting with her legs crossed in a dark suit. Her face displays a rested, calm smile—a completely different emotion from the first issue.
Her new cover is clear and crisp, showcasing Harris presidentially rather than friendly and overfamiliar.
In the interview portion of the magazine, Nathan Heller, a New Yorker writer, wanted to portray Harris as a “moderate and relatable hard worker.”
Heller writes about how Harris ordered pizza while setting up her campaign and how her husband was at SoulCycle and unreachable when Joe Biden dropped out of the campaign.
Harris spoke with Vogue about how female political figures are often seen wearing white, but she refuses.
There is a clear difference between her past and present image represented through the covers. Just a few months ago, Harris was a background figure—Harris the vice president.
Now, her second Vogue cover represents the evolved presidential candidate, Harris, with a clean haircut, pristine suit, and familiar voice.
Her growth since January 2021 is evident through her 2024 Vogue cover. Harris has succeeded in creating a stronger professional image for the entire world to see and remember.
