The New York Yankees are going to the World Series after defeating the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Championship Series, winning 5-2. In the seven game series, the Yankees had won four of the games.
Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton had won the ALCS MVP with a .295 batting average, seven RBIs and four home runs with an on-base percentage of 1.179.
In the second inning, the Guardians had brought in first baseman Josh Naylor for one run thanks to their catcher Bo Naylor, who had hit a double. The score was one to zero.
The game was quiet until the fifth inning. Left fielder Steven Kwan had earned the Guardians another run by going up the middle, allowing second baseman Andrés Giménez to score, giving them two runs to zero.
Carlos Rodón, the Yankees starting pitcher, had been pulled out of the game after pitching 4.2 innings, and pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. came onto the mound. Leiter managed to get them their final out of the inning.
In the sixth inning, Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres started off by getting on base. Followed by the next two at-bats, Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, striking out.
With one out remaining, Stanton comes to the plate. He managed to work Guardians pitcher Tanner Bibee to a full count. The next ball thrown was low in the frame, Stanton swung and it was gone. He had hit a two-run home run, tying the game. The score was now two to two.
The remainder of the game was tied two to two, causing them to go into extra innings. The Yankees started the inning at-bat, with center fielder Jasson Domínguez and left fielder Alex Verdugo both on base.
With one out remaining, Soto was at the plate and the count was one ball and two strikes. The pitch came and Soto swung, making contact with the ball. As the ball went deeper and deeper into the outfield he had realized he had hit a three run home run giving them the lead.The score was now five to three, and the Yankees were in the lead.
The Guardians had one last attempt to score in the bottom of the tenth inning or their season was over. The Yankees reliever pitcher, Luke Weaver, managed to hold the Guardians to a scoreless inning and the game is over. The Yankees made it to the World Series and had a chance to win their first championship since 2009.
