Bearcats tennis finishes second in CUNYAC finals; recap Oct. 25 – Oct. 30

The Baruch College Bearcats had plenty of action this week, with playoff action underway.

Women’s tennis

The women’s tennis team failed to defend its 2021 championship, losing to the Hunter College Hawks in the CUNY Athletic Conference Finals on Oct. 27.

The team kicked off its playoff run on Oct. 25, sweeping the Brooklyn College Bulldogs.

But fortunes turned two days later when the Bearcats lost, 5-2. Ava Deguzman and Esther Benjamin secured the team’s only doubles win, 8-1, while Deguzman secured the team’s only singles win, taking both sets 6-1 and 6-2, respectively.

While it wasn’t the way the defending champions had hoped to finish their season, the Bearcats finished in second place overall in the CUNYAC.

The team will play its next game on April 10 against the Drew University Rangers, where it will play exhibition games to prepare for the fall 2023 season.

Men’s soccer

The men’s soccer team squared off against the John Jay College Bloodhounds on Oct. 29 for the first round of the CUNYAC playoffs, winning 2-0.

Arman Celebi scored the first goal of the game in the eighth minute, while Jemali Zarnadze followed up with his own goal in the 36th minute. Goalkeeper Kellen Sela recorded six saves on the outing.

The Bearcats will play the Lehman College Lightning on Nov. 5 at Queens College for the CUNYAC Finals.

Women’s volleyball

The women’s volleyball team endured a tough week, falling in all three of its contests.

The team kicked-off its week on Oct. 25, losing to the Bloodhounds 3-1. All sets were decided by a margin of about three points except the last set, finishing off a competitive game.

Sarah Chung led the team in kills and digs with eight and 15, respectively, while Amina Muminovic led the team in assists with 29. Fernanda Zamora tallied three aces and Julia Perkowski tallied three blocks.

The team then fell to both the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons and the Hartwick College Hawks in the Dig Pink Tri-Match at Oneonta, losing each match 3-0.

Muminovic led the team in aces, blocks and assists in the match against the Red Dragons, recording two, one and 24, respectively. Chung led the team in kills with nine, while Minami Ebihara led the team in digs with 13.

Chung led the team in kills and blocks against the Hawks, recording 12 and two, respectively. Muminovic led the team in assists and aces with 25 and one, respectively, while Ebihara led the team in digs with 13.

The team will look to start its CUNYAC playoff run on Nov. 1 in its first-round matchup with the City College Beavers.

Cross-country

The men’s and women’s cross-country teams competed in the CUNYAC cross-country finals this week, finishing third and fourth, respectively.

On the men’s side, Daniel Sedgh, Riley Walz, Jose Perez and Jairo Reina all finished in the top 15, finishing sixth, eighth, 11th and 15th, respectively.

On the women’s side, Jillian Quinn and Julia Cuttone finished 13th and 14th, respectively.

Swimming and diving

The men’s swimming and diving team defeated the William Paterson University Pioneers, 94-90, while the women’s team lost to the Pioneers, 114-72, during the teams’ matchups on Oct. 28.

The teams will look to claim a win on Nov. 8 when they take on the York College Cardinals.
