As the labor market continues to bring no job prospects for fresh graduates and job seekers, Baruch College students begin to bear the burden, as students cannot find a job after graduating.
2025 has been reported as the worst year for hiring since 2020, NBC reported.
“For the first time in modern history, a bachelor’s degree is no longer a reliable path to professional employment,” Chief Economist at the Burning Glass Institute Gad Levanon told CNBC.
In a survey conducted by education technology company Cengage Group, only 30% of 2025 graduates reported they found a full-time job in June and July.
“Every day I applied for at least 10-15 jobs. I have reached out to many managers and kept facing rejections,” Mark Purshwell, a finance student at Baruch, told The Ticker.
Purshwell explained that while he is less willing to apply for jobs, he continues to face rejections. Purshwell, like many Baruch students, went to the STARR career development center for help.
“One of the tricks I learned from STARR was how to properly use AI to tailor my resume and find jobs related to my experience,” Purshwell said.
Michael Smith, a Baruch alum who studied computer science, faces the same problem as Purshwell. Using artificial intelligence, he found that his resumes and cover letters had many mistakes.
“After applying and getting some interviews and rejections I have noticed significant mistakes in the supporting documents I submit such as my portfolio and cover letter,” Smith said.
STARR, which is available for free for six months after graduation and after six months for a fee, also provides mock interviews.
To develop professional experience, STARR focuses on giving students experiential learning and skills to develop a stronger cover letter and resume, with the help of AI.
“Doing mock interviews at STARR really prepared me on how to answer all questions at a job interview,” Smith said.
“Using the resources at STARR to tailor my cover letter and resume helped me stand out alongside knowing how to excel [in] an interview.”
