As of Nov. 17, “Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc” sits high on the charts alongside other animated films such as “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” and “KPop Demon Hunters.”
These three films have made their way into mass media due to inspirational messages conveyed through captivating art styles and storytelling.
What all these films have in common are their original stories, each produced by top Asian animation studios such as Ufotable, MAPPA and Sony Pictures Animation, owned by Japan’s Sony Group Corporation.
The cost to produce “KPop Demon Hunters” was $100 million, “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’s” production cost $20 million and “Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc’s” cost $4.1 million dollars.
All together, these three films have accumulated $916 million in worldwide ticket sales revenue, with the exception of “KPop Demon Hunters,” as Netflix owns the intellectual property rights and only occasionally puts the film in theaters as a sing-along event for fans of the film. It has been an outstanding year for the animation studios behind these films, as this shows that fans want more and will tune in for the next major animation film.
Hollywood was once a place where iconic films were produced and filled the hearts of many moviegoers with their original stories and strong connection with the characters. Now, critics argue that Hollywood is falling behind to meet fans’ expectations, alleging that films lack originality and cast actors in roles they don’t seem to fit.
The studios that tend to maintain their relevancy are Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios as they tend to catch the headlines with the releases of their new films and remakes.
More studios are sticking to making films that are sequels or remasters, or bringing back the original cast in newer films for nostalgia. Some films break even or make profit while others are forgotten, with viewers either not considering them proper sequels due to confusing storytelling or questionable alterations.
The demand for animated films will continue to rise, and the studios that listen to their fans will continue to be rewarded.
