Mayor Eric Adams and CUNY Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez have announced $12.3 million in city funding to support a new life sciences facility at Hostos Community College.
The funding, coming from New York City’s Fiscal Year 2026 Adopted Budget, is part of a broader effort to invest more in educational programs and CUNY institutions. The new facility, the Allied Health and Natural Sciences Life Sciences Center, will be located in the Bronx Central Post Office, which is set to undergo a $70 million renovation.
The center will include modern instructional labs, classrooms, offices and student spaces that are designed to support Hostos’ evolving healthcare and science programs. Once completed, it will be able to accommodate up to an estimated 5,000 students each semester. In his announcement, Mayor Adams highlighted the broader impact of the facility, noting that it would open doors for students pursuing careers in the growing field.
“We hope it will serve and help students enter high-paying careers within the city and within the state,” Adams said in a press release.
With its creation, students will have access to more hands-on learning experiences that will equip them with the skills needed for healthcare careers and programs, such as nursing, occupational therapy, dental hygiene and more.
Eric Dinowitz, a NYC Councilmember, also spoke about the importance of supporting the future generations of healthcare workers to improve access to healthcare in communities throughout the city.
“Hostos is preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals at a time when our hospitals and healthcare workers are most in need,” Dinowitz said in a CUNY release.
Construction is set to begin in fall 2026, with the new program expected to open to students in fall 2028.
