The 2025 Met Gala was held on May 5 with celebrities, influencers, and socialites trying to embody the dress code “Tailored For You.” The theme was based on the Met exhibit “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
The exhibit theme was inspired by author Monica Miller, who also helped curate it. Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky and Pharrell Williams served as cochairs alongside Anna Wintour.
Many chose to interpret the theme through the lens of Black dandyism, while others used a looser interpretation, wearing anything fitted and tailored to themselves. Black dandyism is a style with an emphasis on redefining elegance.
The steps of the Met were dressed in dark blue carpeting with a daffodil flower pattern designed by Cy Gavin. Daffodils often represent the arrival of spring, new beginnings and positive change.
Among the best-dressed attendees were Cardi B, Teyana Taylor, Colman Domingo and Diana Ross. They have been praised by fans on social media for being on theme.
Gigi Hadid, Sydney Sweeney and Megan Thee Stallion wore dresses inspired by icons Zelda Wynn Valdes, Kim Novak and Josephine Baker respectively. While each celebrity was praised for their beauty, some felt the gowns were very loose interpretations of the theme.
Hadid wore a gold custom Miu Miu dress with a halter neckline. Fans felt she did not fit the theme as her dress felt more draped than tailored. However, her dress was a reference to a gown Baker wore that was designed by Valdes.
Sweeney was also styled by Miu Miu, inspired by Novak, an actress who dated singer Sammy Davis Jr., a notable dandy. Sweeney will play the actress in Domingo’s “Scandalous,” which depicts their love affair.
Megan Thee Stallion wore a sparkly silver Michael Kors dress with a long white fur coat.
Jennie, Lisa and Rosé of girl group BLACKPINK attended the gala. Jennie was styled by Chanel on the carpet as a long-time brand ambassador for the French fashion house. She wore a tuxedo gown and black jumpsuit with a white flower and pearl accessories.
Lisa wore a sparkly tuxedo top representing Louis Vuitton under the creative direction of Williams. She has been criticized online for wearing the faces of Black icons on her undergarments.
Representatives of designer Henry Taylor later clarified the pattern included people Taylor knew personally and not Rosa Parks.
People were shocked to see Zendaya and Anna Sawai wearing the same outfits, with both donning fitted white suits with rounded wide-brim hats. Videos of Law Roach first seeing Sawai went viral on social media.
“Who wore it better,” he playfully said in an interview with Hello Beautiful.
Law Roach styled Zendaya, Tyla, Angela Bassett and Andre 3000 for the event.
Some attendees also wore literal interpretations of the theme. Jenna Ortega wore a dress made of rulers, and Demi Moore dressed as a dress tie.
Teyana Taylor and Ego Nwodim hosted Vogue’s Met Gala livestream, interviewing attendees on the carpet. However, they received backlash for their disinterest and lack of knowledge when speaking with Shah Rukh Khan.
“Shah Rukh Khan is probably one of the most famous men in the world,” Sabyasachi Mukherjee, the designer who styled Khan, said during the interview.
Videos of Doechii yelling at her team to give her more umbrellas also went viral as she tried to cover her outfit before walking the carpet.
Users on social media dubbed her behavior as disrespectful and rude to her staff. Doechii responded on TikTok, captioning her video, “God forbid a girl needs more umbrellas.”
Emma Chamberlain also returned to conduct interviews for Vogue. Chamberlain has gone viral multiple times for her interactions with celebrities during red carpet interviews.
However, people on social media criticized the lack of invites for Black influencers, such as fashion influencer Wisdom Kaye.
“I was not invited to the met, I know you guys wanna see me there so just letting y’all know,” Kaye wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Looking forward to seeing all the beautiful interpretations of black dandyism tmrw :).”
Kaye is well known for his outfit combination videos and previously attended the 2024 gala. His fans were quick to come to his defense, calling the lack of an invite questionable and disrespectful.
Timothée Chalamet was also noticeably absent from the gala, as he posted videos on Instagram enjoying the Knicks basketball game instead.
