As the lights dimmed down and “Music Box: Reflection” started playing, the official BTS light sticks flickered red on and off. The stage slowly levitated upward, as if it were an inflating music box, and suddenly cheers could be heard as the South Korean musician j-hope popped out to take on his second sold-out stage at Barclays Center on March 14 for his first headlining solo tour, “HOPE ON THE STAGE.”
The show featured 27 songs from the artist’s mixtape, dabbling into BTS’s discography and his own various albums.
The first song of the night was “What If…,” a song from the musician’s 2022 debut studio album “Jack In The Box.” The rapper was showcased on a tri-fold screen, with the middle being red and the sides grey.
There was a rapid change of j-hope’s stage presence as the scene transitioned over from an illuminating burning red to eerily white and grey, with his alter jester persona “Jack” pounding to be let out on the screen as he rapped “Pandora’s Box.”
The stage took on more vibrancy as the night went on with “Trivia: Just Dance,” a song from the BTS album “Love Yourself: Answer,” as j-hope sang about living in the moment and letting yourself go with dancing.
A sweetness took over, making the audience dreamy with “Sweet Dreams (feat. Miguel),” a newly released single that showcased the artist Miguel on the screen as j-hope’s honey vocals filled the venue, the fans slowly waving their flickering yellow light sticks side to side.
The stage was amped up again as j-hope introduced a song that hasn’t been released yet, titled “Mona Lisa.” The audience was turned into the iconic portrait on screen. The concert seemed to pay homage to j-hope’s journey of dancing, rapping, and singing.
There were notable moments in which his background dancers were given the main stage as they showcased their street dancing skills such as breaking, popping, and locking.
The setlist was in no particular order but was formatted to tell the story of his career as an artist.
During “Airplane, pt.2,” “MIC Drop,” and “Silver Spoon,” songs off BTS albums, the crowd chanted the official BTS fan chant, which made the artist grin widely.
During the last segment of the concert, j-hope gave thanks to his band, while giving them their own solos and displaying their names on screen. He did the same with his dancers as well. As they were dancing on blocks, the blocks were moved upward, displaying their names.
He ended the night with “NEURON (with Gaeko, yoonmirae)” as clips from his recent and pre-debut dance practices were displayed on screen.
