Fresh off her first-ever Grammy wins, musical sensation Sabrina Carpenter took to her social media accounts two days after the ceremony to announce that she would be releasing “Short n’ Sweet Deluxe” as a gift to her fans. She credited their support in helping “Short n’ Sweet” win the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album.
Along with the announcement, the pop star revealed the track list, which features five new songs, each packed with her bold humor and undeniable charm. All five tracks were co-written by the singer-songwriter herself along with John Ryan, Amy Allen, Jack Antonoff, and Julian Bunetta.
The deluxe tracks kick off with “15 Minutes,” another fun and lively pop song full of daring and witty lyricism. At a glance, the song is about Carpenter’s feelings regarding her astronomical rise to stardom.
She uses the song to lightly jab at those who believe that she’s just living in her “15 minutes of fame.” Her lyrics reference the people who still underestimate her and view her as a flash in the pan.
“Where did all these parties come from?/When did all you bitches get so nice?/Runnin’ out of the woodwork/And hopin’ there’s no brain between my eyes.” Much like many of her songs do, the song adds in her signature innuendos. The chorus features the lyric, “I can do a lot with fifteen minutes/Only gonna take two to make you finish.” A sonically upbeat and lyrically comical yet profound song overall.
Perhaps the most anticipated song off the deluxe album is Carpenter’s famed single “Please Please Please” featuring Dolly Parton. The “Juno” singer was ecstatic announcing the feature, captioning the Instagram announcement with, “yes that does say featuring Miss Dolly Parton… she wouldn’t want me to swear but holy shit!!!!!”
A music video accompanied the release of the song, and fans had lots of theories about it. As for the song itself, while having a unique sound due to some noticeable country influence, Dolly’s addition pushed it straight into the deep end of the genre. Although it is as much of a fan favorite as the original version, it is a legendary collaboration indeed.
“Couldn’t Make It Any Harder” is absolute perfection. Taking a step back from the bubbly pop she’s become known for, Carpenter delivers a stunningly raw song with heavenly vocals. The “Espresso” singer outdoes herself and shows listeners just how vast her vocal range is as she sings about how she’s guarding herself and making it seemingly impossible for anyone to even touch her.
Following the vocal masterpiece is, “Busy Woman,” which was originally exclusive to select vinyl variations or only available to those who purchased the web store digital album. Carpenter returns to what she does best with another energetic pop song full of witty and relatable lyrics.
She explores another side to romance and love in this song, relaying her experience of coping with rejection.
Much like “15 Minutes,” the track contains a memorable chorus with the lyric, “But if you need my love/My clothes are off, I’m comin’ over to your place.”
Closing off the deluxe tracks is “Bad Reviews.” In the same vein as “Couldn’t Make It Any Harder,” showcasing her remarkable vocals and also leaning into a more country sound like her new version of “Please Please Please.”
The song rounds out one of the main themes of “Short ‘n Sweet,” choosing to ignore the red flags she sees in romantic prospects. The song fits in with the likes of “Lie To Girls” and “Slim Pickins” sonically and thematically.
The deluxe album beautifully expands on the songs from the standard edition, giving fans even more insight into Carpenter’s world and the emotions that charge her music. A wonderful amalgamation of her signature pop sound and brilliantly colorful lyricism.
