From misinformation in 2020 to conspiracy theories about Paul Pelosi’s attack, Elon Musk routinely makes bold, unsupported statements.
His latest complaint about the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s funding for migrant housing in New York City is no different.
On Feb. 10, Musk posted on X that his newly established Department of Government Efficiency had “just discovered that FEMA sent $59 million LAST WEEK to luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal migrants.”
According to Musk who demanded the funds be immediately suspended, this money was “meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high end hotels for illegals.”
His claim that money designated for disaster relief was instead funneled into hotels for migrants is not only misleading but also untrue.
The funds were allocated through the Shelter and Services Program, which has reimbursed cities and organizations for immigration-related expenses during migration surges since 2023.
That didn’t stop Musk from escalating the situation on X.
Musk’s implication led to the firing of four FEMA employees on Feb. 11, who were accused of bypassing necessary procedures to reimburse NYC for hotel costs related to housing migrants.
The Department of Homeland Security revealed that the terminated employees were FEMA’s chief financial officer, two program analysts and a grant specialist.
The DHS also said the employees made “egregious payments for luxury NYC hotels for migrants” and it will not “allow deep state activists to undermine the will and safety of the American people.”
While the details of their policy violation remain unclear, these payments were part of a long-standing process.
What Musk and the DHS referenced didn’t come directly from FEMA’s disaster relief fund, but was allocated by Congress and funded through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to alleviate immigration-related costs.
NYC officials confirmed this was legally approved and distributed in 2024, but Musk hasn’t provided evidence to support his accusation.
Musk’s claim was likely fueled by his stance on immigration rather than facts.
If he genuinely wanted to critique government spending, he should’ve conducted research instead of spreading misinformation and attacking FEMA on misusing disaster relief funds.
Lawmakers raised concerns about crime linked to migrants in NYC, particularly the Tren de Aragua gang, which has reportedly used Roosevelt Hotel as a base for crime.
While it’s fair to investigate security risks, assuming all migrants are criminals or federal funding directly supports crime is highly irresponsible.
Migrants, like all humans, deserve livable housing while they await immigration proceedings.
NYC has a legal obligation to provide housing for those in need, including migrants and Musk’s demand to cut funding compromises this policy and disregards NYC’s humanitarian crisis.
Musk is not an elected official or an expert on FEMA funding; his claim holds no official weight and only fuels unnecessary outrage and confusion.
