As much as I looked forward to the day, I can’t believe I will actually be graduating in a few weeks. I also can’t believe that now, I don’t want to graduate yet. The closer the day comes, the more I want time to slow down so I can enjoy the few college days I have left. And the biggest reason behind that is The Ticker.
I first joined The Ticker in Spring 2022, my second semester as a freshman. I had filled out a Google form that then Copy Chief Farah Javed had posted on social media. I was an editor for my high school newspaper, so I thought being a copy editor for The Ticker would be a breeze.
I was wrong. Turns out The Ticker follows AP Style, and there are several rules to memorize. I don’t mean to intimidate anyone who wants to become a copy editor. It’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
But thanks to Farah and the section editors’ patience, I was able to adapt quickly to The Ticker’s editing schedule.
At the end of the Fall 2023 semester, Copy Chief Atifah Osmani approached me to take over her role for the next semester. She, alongside Editor-in-Chief Maya Demchak-Gottlieb and then Managing Editor Suporna Das, helped me understand what the role entailed.
Being a copy editor is a behind-the-scenes job, so I didn’t get any real exposure to the hectic schedule that the editorial board followed weekly or the effort they put into producing the weekly newspaper. Becoming copy chief made me appreciate the work that goes into it.
Although taking over as copy chief was overwhelming at first, the editorial board did a great job of welcoming me and letting me feel at ease. Making sure articles get in on time, that all editors do their jobs promptly and finishing layout by Thursday night for print is extremely hard to do, but The Ticker team manages to do it every week.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as copy chief. I have had the opportunity to train and work with a group of wonderful editors who are dedicated to their jobs. As copy chief, I was also responsible for looking over all layouts, which exposed me to great writers in our school. It was great to see the interest and effort that Baruch students have put into their articles, and it’s fascinating to read stories written by people with different backgrounds and opinions.
My time at The Ticker has given me friendships that hopefully will last a lifetime. I will miss our editorial meetings where we discuss what is currently wrong with the world, our daily coffee runs to Blank Street and most of all, I will miss Thursday nights, when we all contemplate if we will ever finish our work and get to go home.
I hope that my successor, Josephine Lau, will enjoy being copy chief as much as I have, even with the challenges that may come with the job.
Thank you to our section editors, Alina, Sarah, Irza, Victoria, Karizma and Ali, for putting up with my constant nagging about getting in your articles.
I wish the best to our Editor-in-Chief Maya and our Managing Editor Sonia Kalo as they continue to ensure The Ticker upholds its legacy. Thank you for all the work you have done.
I will miss The Ticker dearly as I depart from Baruch. I am glad to have been part of its long history and hope that I have made a mark.
Goodbye, Ticker! Or, as the British say it, “ta-ta!”
