The ongoing construction at 17 Lex is not only disruptive, but also poorly timed. Baruch College must prioritize its students and staff by avoiding large scale construction projects during peak academic periods.
The Lawrence and Eris Field Building, commonly referred to as 17 Lex, first opened its doors in 1929, making the over 90-year-old structure the oldest building in Baruch history.
The Ticker has previously reported on the construction of 17 Lex as well as similar construction projects in the past.
Even though the building has been long overdue for a makeover, no one should be required to work, attend or teach classes in an active construction environment.
The Editorial Board understands that a project of this scale takes time and challenges in funding can cause significant delays in completion.
However, Baruch should consider the needs of its students and staff by not green-lighting a major construction project during the height of the fall semester.
The 2008 master plan originally outlined six architectural stages for the building’s renovation.
With its 100th anniversary approaching, 17 Lex has finally entered phase two of its multiphase renovation and restoration project — seven years after phase one began.
The initial construction phase that started in 2017 was projected to only last until 2020.
It is clear that Baruch is behind schedule and is attempting to play catch-up at the worst possible time, to the frustration of its many staff and students.
The ongoing renovations have not only been an inconvenience to many, but have also been a safety hazard.
Ultimately, Baruch must prioritize thoughtful construction planning to address the critical need for renovations on its campuses, to avoid disrupting its academic mission and compromising safety.
The college should consider going full force and allocating all of its resources to construction efforts, but it should consider doing so when the majority of the student body is away during the winter and summer sessions.
With better planning and communication to include the opinions of the student body on the matter, Baruch can ensure that everyone’s needs are not sidelined by the construction.
