Get ready to groove along to BLACKPINK member Rosanne “Rosé” Park’s new electrifying single “APT.” featuring Bruno Mars, which dropped on Oct. 18.
Only months after Rosé signed with The Black Label and Atlantic Records, she released “APT.,” the first of her anticipated full-length album “rosie,” slated for release on Dec. 6. This marks her first release since her solo debut album “R” in 2021.
The fun and fresh song was inspired by the popular Korean drinking game—one of her favorites—called the “Apartment Game.”
The players start by chanting “apateu,” short for “apartment.” Whoever leads the round calls out a number, representing the “apartment floor,” and the players must shift their hands to the top until the number is reached. Whoever has their hand placed on top last has a penalty of drinking, and the game continues.
In a video interview for Vogue, Rosé spoke about teaching the game to her producers, which sparked the creation of “APT.”
She ran with the idea, and soon after, Mars jumped in to collaborate, bringing more fun ideas to the table.
The official music video captures the essence of the song—spirited and carefree. A simple pink backdrop, a drum set, and stereos set the scene.
The pop and rock instrumentals that blend throughout the song, along with the music video’s animated scenes, add to the infectious melodies.
The song kicks off with a chant, and then the game begins: “The random game that Chaeyoung [Rosé] likes/Random game/Random game/Game start,” then repeats its catchy hook, “Apateu, Apateu.” Rosé and Mars bring the energy as they dance and jam along to the beat.
The lyrics capture the spontaneity of a fun night out with sparking connections: “Don’t you need me like I need you now?/Sleep tomorrow, but tonight, go crazy.” Mars reciprocates the playful interaction in his verse, as he is ready to party.
Chasing the exhilarating feeling that comes from the desire to win, Rosé sings about coming to get the person playing along with her, implying her intentions of victory.
She is ‘on her way,’ she sings in a mesmerizing repetition. “Now you know the game,” Rosé sings in the bridge.
By shedding light on this popular Korean game, “APT.” has opened doors to the rest of the world to a fun and engaging experience.
“APT.” is now available for streaming on Spotify and Apple Music.
