The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show returned this year after its cancellation in 2019 due to plummeting ratings and criticisms over lack of diversity. The company brought back the show on Oct. 15 to reflect who they are today and to display their shifted values.
Gigi Hadid opened the show with a large pair of wings that spread as she walked down the runway.
Committing to their intentions of creating a more inclusive environment at Victoria’s Secret, the 2024 show saw a more diverse runway. Two trans models walked the runway for the first time: Alex Consani and Valentina Sampaio. Plus-size models, Ashley Graham and Paloma Elsesser, also made their Victoria’s Secret runway debut.
Many famous models from the ‘90s made their return to the runway, including Kate Moss, Eva Herzigová, and Carla Bruni, who are all aged 50 or older.
The Victoria’s Secret runway also saw the return of many veteran Victoria’s Secret Angels such as Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Candice Swanepoel. Veteran models who never became angels also made their return to the VS runway, including Irina Shayk, Joan Smalls, and Liu Wen.
Performances from Tyla, Lisa, and Cher supplemented the models’ walks. Tyla and Lisa even donned their own pair of wings, a first for artists performing at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
The 2024 show had a wide solid gray runway that was leveled with the audience, allowing for unique formations in how the models walked onto the runway. There were five segments in total.
The second segment had models walking in zigzags across the runway before walking straight off. The third segment had models walking out in pairs on opposite sides of the runway before walking back.
Each segment was formatted in ways never seen on a Victoria’s Secret runway. At times, there were even up to 10 models on the runway at once amidst the engaging performances.
However, these formats seemed to cause issues with the cameras, as some models had less screen time than others. Multiple panels on the floor allowed models to rise onto the platform when opening a new segment.
These panels proved to cause problems, as veteran angel Doutzen Kroes got her heels stuck inside the panels, with her shoe almost coming completely off.
Many iconic elements from past shows were absent in the 2024 show. The most notable one being the fantasy bra, which was introduced to the runway in 1997.
Claudia Schiffer, who made her return to the VS runway this year, wore the first-ever fantasy bra in 1996, which only appeared in their catalog and on billboards. The fantasy bra is typically a diamond or gemstone bra usually valued to be at least $1 million, with the most expensive being $15 million.
Another coveted runway feature is the Swarovski outfit, which was introduced in 2011. This outfit was also a singular yearly feature, consisting of an array of Swarovski crystals. The most expensive of them being valued at $1 million. An additional staple missing from the show was the sparkly runway.
The makeup and styling also took a turn this year, with the bombshell wavy hair missing from this year’s runway. Instead, models wore slicked-back hair and pixie cuts.
It’s important to note that not every model that graces the runway was considered an angel. The Victoria’s Secret Angel title, retired in 2019, was reserved for models who received an exclusive contract from Victoria’s Secret.
Models could wear a pair of angel wings on the runway but were still considered Victoria’s Secret models, not angels.
Tyra Banks closed the show with the rest of the models walking out onto the runway for the classic grand finale. Many classic elements from previous shows made their reappearances.
The 2024 show brought about an updated version of the typical Victoria’s Secret runway and is representative of the company’s attempts to show a shift in values and culture.
