The New York Yankees faced the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 14. The final score, 7-1, was an astonishing Red Sox win. Yet the celebration was cut short after the game as following the post-game interviews, Red Sox manager Alex Cora was investigated. Cora’s investigation was prompted due to a statement he made that hinted that the pitch thrown at Aaron Judge was on purpose. While it is publicly known that the Yankees and Red Sox have been rivals for many years, the explicit accusations have spurred controversy within Major League Baseball.
Within the first inning, Yankees player Garrit Cole hit Rafael Devers during his first at-bat, and later in the fourth inning, he put out four fingers and intentionally walked Devers with no one on base and one out. While it was no secret that Devers had batted .333 in 39 at-bats and eight home runs off Cole, Cole publicly stated that Dever is the hardest Latino player he struggled against.
Throughout the game, Cole struggled to pitch, which led to hitting three players during the game, which include Tyler O’Neill, Jarren Duran and Devers. The incidents did not sit well with the Red Sox. Later throughout the game, during the sixth inning, Brayan Bello threw behind Judge’s legs. The Red Sox were heated due to Devers hit-by-pitch, but this incident led to the investigation to determine if what Alex Cora hinted at was true.
MLB began the investigation against the Red Sox manager due to a statement during a post-game interview where he hinted about the pitch being on purpose. “I felt like the first at-bat he hit him on purpose.” Cora told reporters . “It was closed yesterday, like, around the sixth inning, so you know, we had our chance. It didn’t happen. We have to move on.” These comments made MLB think that the pitch Bello threw behind Judge’s legs was on purpose.
While currently there are no actions against Cora and as it seems right now that the controversy has been swept to the side. With the Red Sox and Yankee series complete and the MLB nearing the end of the regular season, the whole incident is behind the Yankees. “It’s baseball,” Judge replied when asked about the situation. Even though the evidence against him appears solid, MLB officially made a statement stating that Cora is not facing suspension for hinting that the pitch was on purpose.
