Liam and Noel Gallagher, brothers of the 90s Britpop-rock band Oasis, have put their 15-year feud aside for a long-awaited reunion tour.
The band officially announced UK and Ireland dates for the beginning of their tour on Aug. 27, two days before the 30th anniversary of their debut album “Definitely Maybe.”
Tickets went on sale on Aug. 31. and quickly sold out. Fans said they encountered long queues and error messages when they tried to purchase on Ticketmaster. Fans were in a frenzy competing for their shot at a coveted seat.
The Oasis Live 25 tour initially consisted of 14 stadium shows, all of which sold out. As a response, two more dates were added in London, Edinburgh, Dublin and Manchester, the duo’s city of origin.
These are “middle-aged fans and a whole new generation alike,” Clare Thorp of BBC said. These generational differences have been shining through the fan base, with Gen X criticizing Gen Z fans of not being “worthy” of Oasis tickets.
It has been 15 years since the band broke up with no official reason for their conflict or return. However, it is often speculated that Noel took the band much more seriously than Liam, as Liam also played into the trashy rockstar aesthetic.
Noel quit the band in 2009 just before a performance in Paris. On the day of their breakup, Noel said “I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”
Formed in 1991, Oasis were rockstars of their generation. While grunge was dominating America in the 90s, British guitar music was having a resurgence. Britpop, a subgenre of alternative rock, was seen as a reactionary movement against American grunge.
Oasis’ music was inclusive and not elitist, with some hailing the group as a working class alternative to Blur, another popular Britpop band.
Although often compared to the Beatles, Noel’s influences for Oasis’ discography “came from acid house, [that] communal feeling of everyone together and that anthemic thing. “Oasis was creating award winning music while holding attitudes that appealed to the public.
Although no official plans have been released about an American leg of the tour, there has been much speculation about potential dates in the U.S. A representative of the band hinted at more tour dates being announced soon, saying “anticipation for details of the tour’s international dates is now rapidly mounting.”
With famous anthems such as “Wonderwall” and “Champagne Supernova,” the brothers’ reunion has excited millions across the globe.
The Gallagher brothers have taken sibling rivalry up a notch, with their long-standing feud resulting in a widely anticipated tour around the U.K.
Although the tour’s dates have been announced, it’s unclear who will open for the band. According to The Independent, the band is currently scouting for potential acts.
“Liam is keen for established acts so it will probably take a bit of back and forth before anything’s confirmed,” an anonymous source close to the band told the newspaper.
The source also denied rumors of Villanelle, the band fronted by Gene Gallagher, Liam’s son, opening for the tour.
