The Bearcat Beat: Women's tennis team starts 2018 campaign strong

The Baruch College Women’s Tennis team started its year off strong, accumlating a 2-1 record on the season. The team earned wins against CUNY Athletic Conference opponents Lehman College and the College of Staten Island, and suffered its only loss to Brooklyn College.

Baruch’s season started with a game against Lehman College, during which the Bearcats were able to defeat the Lightning 5-4 at Alley Pond Tennis Center in Queens Village, New York. Senior Grace Graham and freshman Lauren Kraker teamed up to win a doubles match, with each also earning singles wins.

Their next scheduled match against Purchase College was canceled due to rain.

Baruch's second match of the season, against Brooklyn College, did not have a good outcome for the Lady Bearcats, as they lost 9-0. They were defeated in all three doubles and six singles matches.

In the third match against the College of Staten Island, which was held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, the Bearcats thoroughly dominated. Graham and Kraker led the team to an easy 8-1 victory.

After the Baruch Invitational, the Baruch Cross Country teams looked to shine at their next two races, the Queensborough Community College Invitational and the York College Invitational.

At the Queensborough Invitational, hosted at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, the women’s team placed 15th out of 21 schools. Senior Wendy Gonzalez led the team, finishing in eighth place with a time of 22:18.1. The men finished 14th out of 19 and were led by sophomore Victor Carrano, who placed 23rd with a time of 31:20.7.

In the York College Invitational, the men had better luck as they finished third out of 13 schools. The Bearcats had three runners place in the top 20, with one of those in the top 10.

Freshman Noah Bloomberg finished 12th; sophomore Christopher Swenson finished 15th; and Carrano finished sixth — another top 10 finish. In the women’s race, they finished middle of the pack, fifth out of 10. They were again led by Gonzalez, who finished fourth and was coming off being voted the CUNYAC Women’s Runner of the Week.

Their next races come at the Mount Saint Mary College Invitational in Milton, New York.

Though the Women’s Volleyball team started with a record of 0-5, the team rattled off a win streak of four games.

This led many to believe the team as back on the up and up. However, the team has struggled since the win streak. Since the start, they are 1-3 with an overall record of 5-8. Their one win came by a clean sweep of SUNY Maritime College, but this was not the most important game of this previous four-game stretch.

The Bearcats faced their CUNYAC rival, Hunter College, at Hunter. The Hunter Hawks have always been the powerhouse of the CUNYAC Conference. During this game they beat Baruch in three sets. Sophomore Stella Chung led the team with 10 kills. Junior Sanaa Soumia Hadjeb had 21 assists, and sophomore Danielle Naggar had 14 digs.
