So good they named it twice: Why NYC is the best city in the world

The city that never sleeps, the city of dreams, the Big Apple, the Empire State and the city with an infinite population of rats and pigeons are a few labels associated with New York City. This successful and world-renowned city is currently home to over 8 million people.

Many other cities in the world, such as Hong Kong specifically, are on the path to toppling the wealthy status of New York along with snatching its status of being the greatest city in the world. New York is an evergreen city, a place like no other that can never be toppled off its standing as the greatest city in the world.

New York is only 302.6 square miles, but there is a whole world to be found within such a small area. The city is one of the most diverse in the world, with a massive population of more than 8 million New Yorkers from different backgrounds who have brought their own culture and ingrained it in the city streets.

Little Italy is a well-known neighborhood in lower Manhattan that consists of several restaurants that serve various dishes of antipasti, rich pasta, brick-oven pizza and indulgent Italian desserts. Mulberry Street is infamous for small family-owned businesses that provide Italian delicacies.

In addition to Little Italy, Jackson Heights, located in the borough of Queens, is called Little India for its large South Asian community. Jackson Heights has various restaurants that serve delicacies such as samosas, biryani, mango lassi and naan. In addition to delicious food, there are South Asian clothing shops that sell heavily embroidered traditional attire along with carefully crafted jewelry.

The South Asian community of Pakistanis, Indians, Bangladeshis, Tibetans and Nepalis have brought their culture to this small neighborhood in Queens and have thus furthered New York’s diversity. Although there are specific neighborhoods that have an immensely large population of ethnic groups such as Little Italy, Little India, Chinatown and more, there are diverse streets as well.

One can walk down a street that has an Indian clothing store, a French patisserie, an American diner and an Italian restaurant. This allows New Yorkers to mix with cultures that are different from their own.

New York’s ethnic diversity is merely one of the few characteristics that make it the greatest city in the world. It also has beautiful attractions that will make you feel serene and allow you to appreciate nature. Central Park, for example, is a green resort in the most unexpected environment.

New York is known for its gigantic skyscrapers, but take a moment to acknowledge the fine architecture and intelligence of those who have built these fascinating buildings.

The Flatiron Building is one of the most beautiful buildings in NYC and it has a striking appearance — its tall and slender attributes leave the viewer in awe.

Heading south of the Flatiron district, Brookfield Place, located in Battery Park City, demonstrates a posher side of New York. Brookfield Place is home to several high-end designer stores such as Gucci, Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Hermès.

The building complex also consists of different types of cuisines ranging from a French pastry and crepe shop to an American bar and bistro and popular chain restaurants such as Starbucks. All in all, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The best part of Brookfield Place is its proximity to the Hudson River. The view from Brookfield Place is exceptional — the entire Jersey City skyline is viewable with the blue crashing waves of the Hudson River. During sunset, the sky is painted with hues of purple and pink, a sight truly beautiful to behold.

New York is also home to several corporate headquarters and renowned schools like our very own Baruch College. There is endless amount of opportunity here. It is no wonder that New York is often referred to as “the city of dreams.”

With hard work and determination, New York is able to fulfill your wildest fantasies. People such as the legendary Frank Sinatra and Billy Joel or the modern Cardi B and Jay-Z are all individuals who made it here — and so can you.

So the question needs to be asked again — is New York the greatest city in the world? Undoubtedly, it is. As Gerard Kenny said in his song, “New York, New York, so good they named it twice.”
