About The Ticker
The Ticker is Baruch College’s independent, student-run newspaper. It is currently in its 84th year of production. It produces a new issue approximately every week, totaling 25 issues over the course of the academic year. It houses six sections: News, Opinions, Business, Arts, Science and Sports.

The Ticker is a proud member of the Associated Collegiate Press.

Joining The Ticker
The Ticker is always looking for new staff and editorial members! We are looking for staff writers, photographers, copy editors, multimedia specialists and graphic designers.

The Ticker houses six sections: News, Opinions, Business, Arts and Style, Science and Technology and Sports. Staff writers generally sign up to receive weekly topics emails for the sections to which they are interested in contributing. Staff writers can receive topics emails from as few or as many sections as they would like and are not obligated to pick up a topic every week. If staff writers would like to pitch their own topic to the respective section editor, they are more than welcome to do so.

Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 after dethroning Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do.” The Bronx artist has become the first female rapper to achieve a solo number one hit since Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Woop (That Thing)” in 1998.

J Balvin and Willy Williams presented a remix of their summer hit “Mi Gente” featuring Beyoncé. Following the release, the remix topped charts on multiple music streaming sites. Beyoncé donated proceeds from the song to hurricane relief charities for Puerto Rico, Mexico and other affected Caribbean islands.

Legendary rocker Tom Petty, who has sold over 80 million records, has died at the age of 66 from a heart attack. He was known as the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, as well as the co-founder of the band Traveling Wilburys.

A Doll’s House Part 2, a Lucas Hnath sequel to Henrik Ibsen’s classic play, closed on Broadway. The show, which starred Tony winner Laurie Metcalf, ran 30 previews and 173 regular performances.

A musical biopic about the life of pop legend Cher has announced a Broadway run. The show plans to celebrate the singer’s career by having three actresses portray Cher in different eras. Following a tryout in Chicago during the summer of 2018, the production plans to take Broadway in the fall of 2018, at the Neil Simon Theatre.

The Emmy Award-winning show “Saturday Night Live” has returned for its 43rd season. The first episode was hosted by Ryan Gosling and featured Alec Baldwin as President Donald Trump in the cold opening. Jay Z was the musical guest, honoring Colin Kaepernick during his performances of “Bam” and “4:44” from his latest album.

Former Fox News star Megyn Kelly premiered her new NBC talk show “Megyn Kelly Today.” In an unexpected spin from politics, Kelly promises the show to be bipartisan, uplifting and authentic.

The Lion King’s Tony winner Julie Taymor will direct a biopic about feminist icon Gloria Steinem for the big screen. The screenplay will be written by Sarah Ruhl, who is known for her work on off-Broadway stages.

Spanish fashion house Balenciaga once again stunned the world of fashion during Paris Fashion Week by debuting a collection of Crocs. The Balenciaga version of the infamous foam clogs are seated on a 10-inch platform, adorned with various charms like flags, bumper stickers and animals.

French cosmetics and hair product giant L’Oreal presented its first ever fashion show at Paris Fashion Week. The runway featured not only a parade of models, but also British pop star Cheryl, as well as Oscar-winning actresses Helen Mirren and Jane Fonda. The show was created to showcase the brand’s new products and contributions to Paris Fashion Week over the years, as well as solidify its status in the fashion world.
