Baruch College’s Undergraduate Student Government met for its seventh Senate meeting of the fall 2022 semester on Oct. 25th.

The meeting began with nominations for the Undergraduate Student Senate representative.

Student Avroham Malachowski introduced himself and explained his purpose for running. He discussed the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on students.

If elected, he said he hopes to bring the Baruch environment back to normal to help students assimilate into the campus. He also hopes to lobby CUNY central to get more funding and extra resources.

Table members motioned to nominate his submission and to vote for him. It passed 19-0-0.

VP of Legislative Affairs Ashley Chen presented a report. She had drafted a statement from USG regarding the Iranian protests after the death of Mahsa Amini.

Table members raised concerns around not inputting resources people can follow and share to help in the statement. Chen said she hopes to put out a statement as soon as possible because the situation is urgent.

Chair of Marketing Adelaide Ilyasov recommended that if anyone had resources, to share them with her before Nov. 7, so they can be added to USG’s weekly newsletter.

The motion to post the statement passed 19-0-0.

Next, Ilyasov had a report. She raised concerns regarding communication with members about deadlines and stated that some rules will be changed to address that.

She also reminded members to fill out the graphics form for an event to be marketed. She said that USG is looking to recruit people to post TikTok content on their page.

Chair of Finance Asher Gonzalez went over late club budget proposals.

First, the Dominican Student Association requested a budget of $7,000. Gonzalez planned to allocate the $7,000 based on the email responses from the club’s treasurer regarding any questions the table members had prior to the meeting.

The budget passed 19-0-0.

The Afghan American Club’s proposed budget was $500. Gonzalez added an extra $15 into the miscellaneous category in co-sponsorships. The motion passed 19-0-0.

The Zicklin Undergraduate Tax Society requested a budget of $1,830. Members raised concerns around the $185 in the equipment category. Once clarified, the motion passed 19-0-0.

The Chairperson of USS and the CUNY Student Trustee Salimatou Doumbouya spoke a few words regarding USS and her position in the Board of Trustees.

President Laiba Hussain thanked Doumbaya for her time and asked about her plans regarding Hunter College’s Brookdale Campus Residence being shut down.

Doumbouya stated that she has released a statement and is currently working with CUNY to create a group around affordable housing for students. She stressed the importance of spreading the word about these issues.
